Aaron Cockerill was grateful to his wife for the safe arrival of his clubs at the Mallorca Golf Open after making a strong start at Son Muntaner Golf Club on Thursday.

The Canadian's preparations for this week's event were disrupted as his clubs did not arrive until Wednesday evening, with his wife Chelsea having to fly to Madrid to collect them.

But that did not seem to affect Cockerill, who began the week 110th on the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex, as he fired an opening 68 projecting him to 107.

In fact he was well on his way to -5 after posting 7 birdies and 2 bogeys through 17 holes, however he proceeded to drive OB on the par 4 18th, took 3 off the tee, hit his approach just over the green for his 4th ending up with a double bogey 6.

The lead is at -8 from Englishman Marcus Armitage who was firing on all cylinders with a 63.

During an on-course interview, Cockerill said: "My clubs didn't come. My wife flew back  the 90 minutes to Madrid on Wednesday and went and got them for me.She actually refused to board the return flight until she filmed my bag going into the plane.  I was able to walk the course and at least see it.

"But yeah, I had an hour on the range last night with my own clubs and here we are!

"It's OK, if you hit the ball where you're looking, you'll be OK."

Cockerill and his wife are expecting their first child and he added: "We wanted to do a trip somewhere together so this actually worked out great, coming to Mallorca - it's an amazing place.

"This might be the last trip she does before the baby comes and hopefully we have a good week on the course and make the most of it and have a few days after as well just to relax."

His first priority is to make the cut and his 2nd round begins on the 10th tee at 8.45am local time.
