Sometimes you have to be lucky to be good is the old adage, and Chris Gotterup who won his 4th title in his short stay on the PGA Tour certainly was all of that, openly admitting that he began Sunday just trying to improve his position, not thinking he was going to win.
He is the 2026 winner of the Phoenix Open 63 71 67 64 -16.
Two time winner, Hideki Matsuyama was holding off Gotterup, Kim, Thorbjornsen, and for a while Scheffler, with the 54 hole lead and a bogey free Sunday looking for his third title, until he got the "lefts" on the par4 17th driving it nearly in the water for a scrambling par, compounding it by hitting it way left on 18 resulting in a bogey 5 and to fall into a -16 playoff with Gotterup.
On 18, Lady Luck smiled on Gotterup who hit his massive drive so far right it went into the stands, only to find a good lie in the trampled down grass, however the good arrived as his approach rolled to within 4 feet for birdie, when bogey looked more likely.
The playoff was anti climatic as Matsuyama hit it even further left off the tee, and Gotterup hit a another huge drive down the fairway then sunk a 45 footer for birdie to conclude the week.
