Torrential rain, flash flooding puts Greenbrier Classic in doubt.

The Greenbrier Classic is scheduled to begin two weeks from Thursday, but a storm has left the course and the area flooded to the degree that West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin has issued a state of emergency for Greenbrier County.

The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.V., meanwhile issued this statement:

"Due to the torrential rains that have fallen in Greenbrier County, W.Va., throughout the day, The Greenbrier is experiencing heavy flooding throughout the resort and in surrounding areas. All actions are being taken to keep all guests and Team Members safe, and that is the focus of everybody at this time.”

 

Greenbrier owner and CEO Jim Justice, a West Virginia native, said, “It’s like nothing I’ve seen. But our focus right now isn’t on the property, the golf course or anything else. We’re praying for the people and doing everything we can to get them the help they need.”

 

Bubba Watson lives on the property and his video shows the course underwater as the river flowing through it has burst through it's banks, Surrounding roads, bridges and all their accessories have been severely compromised as some 10" of rain has fallen within 10 hours with more expected.

 

The governor's office has reported one young boy was swept to his death with other fatalities expected.
