Rory returns to #1 with win at Firestone

Having covered sports around the world for 30 years I have often said there are only a few athletes I'd pay to go and watch play.. Ali, Georgie Best, Arnie, Jack, Lee, Pele, Tiger,Walter..so good you need only mention there first names..

Add Rory to that list. Yesterday he wiped out Segio's 3 shot lead in 3 holes and closed with a 4-under 66 to win the Bridgestone Invitational and return to No. 1 in the world.

It is the way he is doing it that has us all shaking our heads. Firestone south, although softened by rain is a tough, narrow championship course and he tore it apart. He is simply smashing the ball off the tee, carrying a controlled draw 320 yards, long even by pro standards, he was 30 yards ahead of Sergio all day. Apart from Angel Cabrera earlier this year I have not seen a display of driving this good in recent memory.

He is rendering 480 yard par 4's to an enormous whack off the tee and a 9 iron in. He hits it so far the longest iron in his bag is a four, and he carries 4 wedges. His confidence is sky high and it shows in his putting whether it's at 10 on the stimp as it was at Hoylake, or 13 at Firestone..

Good luck to anyone trying to beat him on this form on a wider course, like Valhalla !!More importantly for me was his statement in his post match interview that he did not want there to be any let down this week following his Open Championship celebrations. He looked every part the champion, and he was focused and hungry.. just the way Tiger did...

Tiger if you didn't know is with his back specialist in Florida this morning after the jarring it took on the 2nd hole which led to his withdrawl. His immediate future is uncertain, it sure doesn't look good, although this may end the debate as to whether he should be selected by captain Watson for Gleneagles..

Sergio who is having a career year played beautifully and closed with a 71, though his runner-up finish was enough to move him to No. 3 in the world. He would have won if not for Rory, both at Hoylake and here.

Marc Leishman (67) finished alone in third. Patrick Reed holed out for eagle on No. 17 in his round of 65 and gave him a tie for fourth, enough to move him up to No. 7 in the Ryder Cup standings and boost his hopes of making his first team with only the PGA Championship left in the qualifying period.

Phil Mickelson made 10 birdies for a career-best 62 at Firestone, and I think Watson will pick him for his Ryder Cup squad.

Meanwhile the rest of the PGA Tour is playing the Barracuda Championship in Reno NV., http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/barracuda-championship/leaderboard.html where Geoff Ogilvy won for his eighth PGA Tour title and first since 2010, scoring five points with an eagle on the par-5 13th and pulling away for a five-point victory in the modified Stableford event.
Players received eight points for double eagle, five for eagle, two for birdie, zero for par, minus-one for bogey and minus-three for double bogey or worse

The senior circuit is playing the 3M Championship at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine Minnesota, where Kenny Perry scrambled for a birdie on the 18th hole to beat hard-charging Bernhard Langer (63) by a stroke. He has been offered a place in the PGA Championship this week at home in Valhalla..http://www.pgatour.com/champions/tournaments/3m-championship/leaderboard.html
The PGA Tour Canada stop was in Calgary this week where Brock Mackenzie ran away from the field with a final round 6-under 66 at Sirocco Golf Club to capture the ATB Financial Classic, his second career PGA TOUR Canada win.
The 33-year old set the 72-hole scoring record for the PGA TOUR Canada era at 27-under 261 and moved to No. 3 on the Order of Merit, in position to earn Web.com Tour status at the end of the season.

In Hayward California, Tony Finau won the Stonebrae Classic for his first Web.com Tour title, closing with a 4-under 66 for a three-stroke victory.
The 34-year-old Finau, from Salt Lake City, had a 22-under 258 total at TPC Stonebrae and earned $108,000 to jump from 24th to eighth on the money list with $238,125. The top 25 after the final four regular-season events will earn 2014-15 PGA Tour cards.

Cam Burke and Justin Shin shared the honours as top Canadians in the field, finishing tied for 21st and carding matching 70s in the final round
