Yesterday I wrote about who the spark plug would be for the Yanks and after both sides sawed off the morning foursomes Bubba Watson answered that question to lead off the afternoon when he pumped up the crowd, asking them to keep roaring as he drove, and he and Webb Simpson overwhelmed Paul Lawrie and Peter Hanson, then Keegan Bradley came right out after Bubba and kept the roars going with putt after putt, 10 birdies in all as they held off the superMac's.
If it wasn't for Nicolas Colsaerts having an all time record breaking round for a Ryder Cup rookie, eight birdies and an eagle to beat Woods and Stricker almost single handed, this might be over already at 6-2.
Saturday synopsis
Ian Poulter started Saturday taking on the crowd and Bubba Watson on the first tee and finished off Saturday with 5 straight birdies, finally and emphatically pumping a little life into his beat up European team.
Down 5-3, it was clear Saturday had to belong to Ollie's team to give them any chance in the US dominated Sunday singles.
It didn't happen, the Yanks led by an exuberant Keegan Bradley, and a very steady Jason Dufner and Zack Johnson won the morning foursomes 3-1 to go up 8-4 and the rout was on until Poulter's heroics gave his team a little hope, as they split the fourball matches 2-2 to trail 10-6 heading into Sunday, where the US only needs 41/2 points out of 12 possible..... I told you it was a little hope..
The Sunday singles are out, and I have listed my analysis after the following recap
Saturday morning foursomes
Match 9. B Watson /W Simpson vs J Rose/ I Poulter 8.20am est
Result..Poulter took on the crowd and Bubba on the first then put his money where his mouth was winning the first hole and eventually Europe won a tight match 1up.
Match 10.. K Bradley / P Mickelson vs L Donald / L Westwood 8.30am est
Result.. Keegan Bradley is just on fire, Lee Westwood is not.. this was over early, finished on the 12th green a 7&6 thrashing for the US
Match 11... J Dufner / Z Johnson vs N Colsaerts / S Garcia 840am est
Result.. Big Nick made everything on Friday, and as so often happens made nothing on Saturday, and the steady and at times spectacular Dufner and Johnson pair were in front all the way, it ended when Colsaerts hit it into the water at the par 3 17th... US wins 2&1
Match 12.. J Furyk / Brandt Snedeker vs R McIlroy / G McDowell 850am est
Result.. The Yanks led all the way in a close match, Rory made a clutch putt on 16, then left one on the lip at 17, before Furyk hit a beauty from the fairway bunker at 18, and GMac made a mess of his wedge from 125 yards.. US won 1up
Saturday afternoon fourball matches
Match 13 .. D Johnson/ M Kuchar vs Nicolas Colsaerts / P Lawrie
Result..This was close and A/S at 16, but big DustinJ made a putt across the green at 17 for the difference as US won 1up
Match 14.. BWatson / WSimpson vs JRose / FMolinari
Result.. I was surprised to see this pairing from Ollie, they went down early, never led and it was all over from this inspired American pairing on the 14th green.. US wins 5&4
Match 15.. TWoods / SStricker vs SGarcia / Luke Donald
Result.. European pair finally playing up to expectations were 4 up at the turn but Tiger who hasn't won a point in this event got it down to 1up with a beauty putt on 16, then hit it to 6 feet on 17, only to see Donald put his tee shot inside him to halve the hole. Europe won 1up
Match 16... JDufner / ZJohnson vs RMcIlroy / IPoulter
Result.. This match turned when Rory birdied 13 to get it to 1down, then Poulter birdied 15, 16,17 and 18 for a sensational finish and the 1up win to give his mates a little hope for the singles..

Sunday single matches
Match 17... BWatson vs LDonald
Result ..I did pick Luke, he had Bubba alone, and after they both birdied the first he took over. 2 up on the 5th he missed a 10 footer to go 3up and rolled it 3 feet past. Bubba waved him to pick up and for me it was over right there.Europe 2up
Match 18.. WSimpson vs IPoulter
Result..I said 2&1 for Poulter and he won 2up, but not until he took the final 2 holes after a tight match..
Match 19.. KBradley vs RMcIlroy
Result.. Rory never trailed and in true world #1 fashion he won it 2up on 17.. turned to the crowd and took a bow..Rory almost missed his tee time, got mixed up with central and eastern time, arrived in a cop car 10 minutes before, and beat USA's best player !! Europe is now up 3 on the day
Match 20.. PMickelson vs JRose
Result.. Everyone picked Phil who was 1up on 16 but Justin won 17 and the the coup de gracie ! he birdied 18, to shock the crowd, maybe even himself, and won 1up
Match 21.. BSnedeker vs PLawrie
Result... I did warn all about Lawrie, he came through in spades and capped off his best year with a 5&3 thrashing of another US stud.. amazing 5 wins for Europe
Match 22... DJohnson vs NColsaerts
Result....All square on 13, Big Dustin won 14 15 and wrapped it up on 16 to win 3up
Match 23.. ZJohnson vs GMcDowell
Result.. GMac fought hard but Zack was too steady, never trailed and won 2&1 as ...well as someone predicted..
Match 24.. JFuryk vs SGarcia
Result...Sergio was behind all day, but he birdied 17 to get even then won 18 with a par 4 when Furyk swallowed a bitter pill and missed an 10 footer... Europe wins again, they are at 12 points..
Match 25.. JDufner vs PHanson
Result...Dufner was 4up at the turn, got a bit sloppy and let the big Swede back in, and he fought back to only 1down going to 18, but Dufner made 4 to Hanson's 5 to win for the USA
Match 26.. MKuchar vs Lee Westwood
Result.. this match was all square on 11, but Westwood won 12, 13 and 15 to upset Kuchar 3&2.. wow !! Now they have 13 points !!
Match 27.. SStricker vs MKaymer
Result... Tight match as the comeback is now in full swing. A/S on 16, Stricker misses a short one to bogey 17 to Kaymer's par, then Kaymer makes an 8 footer for par to win 1 up and damn it Europe gets to 14 points and Martin runs across the green, jumps into his captains arms and the celebrations begin...
Match 28 TWoods vs FMolinari
Result.. Tiger's match didn't matter as I predicted... but for the wrong reason.. Europe had returned the 1999 favour from Brookline, equalling the biggest comeback of all time, as Tiger made 5 to Molinari's 4 to leave the match AS
This most incredible of days had so many story lines..for me all of them painted on the canvas provided by Seve. He was on their bags and most certainly in their hearts. Luke, Poulter, Rory, Justin and Paul Lawrie all did their jobs, winning the first 5 matches...then Sergio, Lee and out of form Martin Kaymer rescuing an indifferent season with the putt of his life.. they won it, they won it against all odds for their beloved captain, Seve's best friend, Jose Marie Olazabal..
What a day, as I have been saying all week, the most exciting 3 days in sport.
