The morning wave was in with Rickie Fowler leading the pack at -5 67, until veteran Finn Mikko Ilonen went out and shot -7 65 to grab a two shot lead, before Glenfiddich's and pints of heavy tonight at Dundonald Links on the Scottish Ayrshire coast.

Ilonen shot 31 34 -7 65 with no bogey's in easy conditions for Ayrshire. He is a part time European Tour player these days ranked in the low 400's world wide.

The Finn arrived at Dundonald Links for the fourth event of the Rolex Series off the back of four missed cuts and with just four sub-70 rounds all season.

He is a five-time winner on the European Tour, though - with one of those victories coming on links at the 2014 Irish Open - and he showed all his class on the Ayrshire coast to get to -7 and make an excellent start in the hunt for a share of the seven million dollar prize fund.

World Number ten Rickie Fowler was then in a group of 6 players at -5 67 alongside  Paul Peterson, three-time Major Championship winner Padraig Harrington, English duo Ian Poulter and Callum Shinkwin, and Australian Andrew Dodt.

Rory  McIlroy has no short game right now and he battled to a +2 74.
