Round 1 underway on Friday after rain delays the US Open

US Open leaderboard http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/us-open/leaderboard.html

Play has resumed at 7.30am this morning at a very soft, soggy Oakmont CC , however the weather system that has brought inches of rain to the Pittsburgh area has moved on, and all but nine of the field have resumed or are ready to begin their first rounds.

There were 3 delays in all on Thursday, for what it's worth a  28 year old qualifier Andrew Landry has shot -4 66 to find himself atop the leaderboard.

With soft greens and fairways and little wind, the vaunted fast firm and running Oakmont will probably not show up until Sunday, so I expect players to take advantage of the scoring conditions, although the greens albeit soft are still fast and treacherous.

Rory and Danny Willett are at +4 through 15 holes and Jordan Spieth is at +2 through 14 and most of the late wave including Jason Day along with Phil Mickelson have yet to tee off.

So a long day lies ahead as they try and make up for lost time and get back on schedule. With average rounds on the PGA tour taking more than 5 hours it seems likely some of the late wave may have to finish their second rounds on Saturday morning.
