After a week of hot by British standards, sunny, breezy week on Royal Lytham and St Annes on the NW coast of England, hard by the Irish Sea, it took a two hole playoff to decide the 2026 Women's Open.

Last year in at Royal Porthcawl in Wales, a diminutive Japanese, Miya Yamashita defied her stature with a two shot win, withstanding a Sunday charge from Charley Hull.

This year another Asian girl, who plays mostly in Japan, and only once at the Open last year when she MC,  Shiho Kuwaka outlasted German, Esther Henseleit in a two hole playoff for her 2nd LPGA/LET win this year.

" It was a thrill to play in this most historic Open in front of the fans who turned out to cheer for us, also last week in Japan there was an earthquake, I want to wish everybody there well.

It was amazing to be the 2nd Japanese winner in a row after Miya last year, I only hope more women like us can continue to come through."

This was a record for women's golf $1,500,000

The German star can add this runner up medal to the Silver she won at the Olympics.

Three Japanese women have won this Women's Open in the last eight years and remarkably 12 of the last 20 winners back to 2007 have been of Asian descent.

Harrington/ Cink back on top again on Sunday, Portugal Invitational....36 hole results...

PGA Tour Champions : Portugal Invitational  Leaderboard

Note >>>> Sunday play is underway, click on my link for updated scoring

The Champions Tour goes through phases of domination as 50 year olds step down from the tougher courses and competition on the PGA Tour to their old peers again, who may be older than them by then and not as good.

Forgetting the years Arnie, Jack, Gary and Lee were and dominating, more recently the Boss of the Moss Loren Roberts went from an above average 8 victory PGA Tour to 13 victories featuring 4 majors on the Senior circuit.

Steve Stricker took charge for a while then a relative unknown Kiwi, Steve Alker came along in 2021 and amassed 11 wins, a major and 2 Charles Schwab Cup titles, with over $13.8m.

Now Paddy Harrington and Stewart Cink have joined a fading Alker as the top guns, joined this year by rookie Zach Johnson who already has 3 wins.

Leaders

RC Vice Captain Padraig 16x9

Harrington 66 65 -13, Cink 67 64 and Rory Sabbatini 65 66 -13 all lead this inaugural Portugal Invitational, with Zach Johnson right behind 64 68 -12.

Host

Ernie Els, the host, has redesigned an old Arnold Palmer design, Dom Pedro Victoria GC, and renamed it the Els Club at Vilamoura and after a lifetime of holidaying and playing in the Algarve, he told the media " I'm very excited, very thankful, it's taken a long time but the Champions Tour is finally in Portugal!"
