Dustin Johnson rallies late to lead a jam packed leaderboard at Saudi International ....Full leaderboard

 Saudi International Leaderboard

Kevin Na and Dustin Johnson were starting to seperate themselves from the pack until the 13th hole, both at -11 when DJ made his first mistake for a double bogey six, while Na made bogey then followed that with a double and suddenly the chasing pack filled with great names were right back in contention.

In fact there were18 players with 3 shots of each other with a breezy sunny day ahead on Sunday at this Saudi International, and it is truly an International field.

In the clubhouse at -10, Swede Soren Kjeldsen, England's Tyrrell Hatton and the lanky American Tony Finau. Right behind at -9 Spain's Sergio Garcia, South African George Coetzee, Germany's Martin Kaymer, Norway's Victor Hovland, England's David Horsey, and Calum Hill from Scotland.

However the big American world #1 rallied with late birdies at 17 and 18 to ease out in front by 2 shots with a -4 66, -13 total with Frenchman Victor Perez closing with a 66 of his own in second at -11, and that's they'll be in the final pair when play starts tomorrow morning.

Dustin Johnson

Johnson won the first event here in 2019 and was second last year so he loves this Royal Greens G&CC. He hadn't made a bogey in 53 holes until he found the water at #13.

The prize fund here is only $3.5m US with just under $600,000 to the winner compared to $7m and $1.3m on the PGA Tour at Phoenix, however it's one of golf's not so little secrets that the top players travelling to Saudi receive as much appearance money as they would if they won playing in the US.

Connors, Hadwin T27 on the weekend Waste Management Phoenix Open.. full leaderboard

Waste Management Phoenix Open full leaderboard here.

Another lovely sunny day in desert around Scottsdale, Arizona finds Corey Connors (68) and Adam Hadwin (70) T27 at -5 as they head into the weekend at the all green Waste Management Phoenix Open. They are 7 shots behind leader Xander Schauffele 66 64 -12 who was T2 last week at Torrey Pines.

I'll always remember driving into Scottsdale how vividly green the courses are against the dry brown sand and the huge green cactus, and wondering how they manage to keep them that colour in the air which is so arid and clean. It's always amazing to a boy from cold rainy Scotland to see trees full of oranges growing along the sides of city streets in that part of the world

Making headlines at 54 is US Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker 65 66 -11 vying to become the oldest player to ever win on the PGA a record that Sam Snead at 52, 10 months has held since 1965. Stricker plays mainly on the Champions Tour, last winning on this tour at Kapalua in 2012. Keegan Bradley (65) joins him in 2nd spot.

The cut fell at -3 so Nick Taylor 70 70 -2 didn't make it. Headliner Rory McIlroy playing here for the first time is in with the Canadians T27 -5 70 67 so they will all need 2 really low rounds this weekend to contend

Stars in contention after rain delayed 2nd round at Saudi Open....full leaderboard

 Saudi Open Leaderboard

With drone technology we are seeing some fascinating aerial shots of the River Greens complex surrounding the Saudi Open, the subdivision lots all clearly marked out and ready for the luxury housing that will follow when the ex patriots, and tourists from around the world arrive to take up the residence Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and his ruling family are anticipating.

Viktor Hovland

The catalyst for all of this is now partially through round 2 after a rare weather delay from 1pm -3 local time with young Norwegian star Victor Hovland in the clubhouse lead after his bogey free -6 66.

When play resumed Kiwi Ryan Fox managed to get finished with a 65 -10 total for the overnight lead in the clubhouse and half of the field still not finished, and the cut projected to fall at E,  the final field for the weekend won't be  set until early Saturday morning.

However if you look at my leaderboard you'll see it's shaping up to be a good weekend with stars like Tommy Fleetwood and Dustin Johnson at -8, Justin Rose at -7, Tony Finau and Tyrrell Hatton at -6. Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson at -4 all due to return to play at 7.30am local time before beginning their 3rd rounds.

What stunning sunsets they enjoy with this River Greens complex perched right on the edge of the Red Sea, this Economic City megaproject announced by then King Abdullah in 2005 is still under construction, in 2015, only 10 years old the population was 7,000, expected to quadruple by today with the goal of being a non-oil dependent city.

However the Kingdom as it is known still suffers from it's reputation for disregarding and abusing native Saudi's and thousands of expatriate workers from Asia who live in crowded unsanitary conditions, their futile war with Yemen, the crippling loss of oil revenues fuelled by COVID, that have brought development to a standstill while the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman tries to lead his country into a new future hopefully accompanied by wealthy tourists and investment companies from from around the world.

Hadwin leads Canadians at Waste Management Phoenix Open.....Friday leaderboard / tee times

Waste Management Phoenix Open leaderboard here

It's very important when scoring is low, to get off to a start that keeps you in the mix, and all 3 Canadians managed that in ideal weather at the Waste Management Phoenix.

Adam Hadwin leads the way with his bogey free T12 -4 67 just four shots back of co-leaders Matthew NeSmith and Mark Hubbard -8 63 who played in virtual silence early in the morning.

By the way, and because you many never heard of him 'NeSmith" is not a typo....

Corey Connors is T37th -2 69 and Nick Taylor T50th -1 70

Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas both are starting today T50th -1 70 as well.

They did allow 5000 fans in, spread out throughout the course instead of the usual 200,000, with the predawn lineup eager to cram into the party at the stadium par 3 16th.

Why Patrick Reed is not at Waste Management Phoenix Open.. Thursday TEE TIMES

 Waste Management Phoenix Open

Now why do you think Patrick Reed would choose to fly from LA through 12 time zones to King Abdullah Economic City in Saudi Arabia, instead of just the jaunt from LA to Phoenix..?

The prize fund is $3,500,000 with around $600,000 to the winner in the Middle East, but $7.3m with $1.3m to the winner, and the Ryder Cup points on award are about the same, and there are points available to the Race to Dubai and the Fed Ex Cup.

He says he loves the European Tour, "gets him out of his comfort zone back home".. Ok, admirable but I'm sure he could have adjusted his schedule to obtain the same goal.

First class travel is very comfortable, he will be greeted with open arms and opulence at both destinations..

So how about this. King Abdullah and his ridiculously oil rich family offered Patrick and all the other stars more appearance money guaranteed than he would have received by winning in Phoenix..

Oh yes and he'll be a million miles away from all the noise about his cheating that would follow from San Diego, despite the fact there will only be a restricted number of fans in Phoenix. There are next to none in Saudi and few journalists.

Patrick

Now that makes sense, although, and this would be no surprise, he would deny it.

Rory McIlroy 8am 10th, is the headliner, Webb Simpson the defending champion and there are three Canadians this week, Nick Taylor 8,40 10th, Corey Connors 12.40 10th and Adam Hadwin 11.40 10th.

Very strong field this week including Johnson, Reed, Mickelson, DeChambeau at the Saudi International... TEE TIMES

 Saudi International Tee Times

Despite International condemnation of the country's record on Human Rights, especially against women, this year's field at the 3rd annual Saudi International is as strong as it's ever been, and it includes Patrick Reed, fresh off last week's win at the Farmers Insurance and all the controversy surrounding it.

It's the latest stop in the European Tours "Desert swing", and another example of oil rich sheiks in this case King Abdullah throwing millions and millions of US dollars in both prize money and hush hush 'appearance fees" at top players, and beam those beautiful pictures of what is being described as an "absolutely perfectly conditioned, fun to play Royal Greens course " around the world, in hopes of adding this country as a destination along the lines of the UAE and the city of Dubai. The tee times are available on my link above. here are some of the notables.

740am  Mickelson, Fleetwood, Weisberger

8,00am  DeChambeau, Wallace, Rose

8.10am  Johnson, Westwood, Hatton

12.20  Stenson, Reed, Hojgaard

12.30  Poulter, WWillett, Hovland

12.40  McDowell, Casey, MacIntyre

Others like Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els, Miguel Angel Jimenez have all flown in, Dustin Johnson won the first one, and Graeme McDowell is the defending champion.

Who will tell Patrick Reed, ?...Farmers Insurance Open final scoreboard

Farmers Insurance Open final leaderboard  here

In the end Patrick Reed coasted to his 9th win amid a hail of condemnation from everybody, except Reed himself and the PGA Tour.

Patrick Reed

His -4 68 was good enough for a 5 shot win at the Farmers Insurance Open, over the pack including Victor Hovland, Xander Schauffele, and Ryan Palmer.

He credited his resilience, and the new swing he and the David Leadbetter team have been working on for his success.

"You look at all the great players throughout the years and they are all very resilient. No matter what's going on around them, off the course or on, they really find a way to get the job done, to really just drive in and keep on improving each shot each day"

So I won't go over the ruling from Saturday again. I and everyone else has had their say. My question who is going to tell Patrick.

The truth is he is the Masters champion, he almost won the Race To Dubai last year, in fact was in the drivers seat right until the end. He is welcomed with open arms by the European Tour and their sponsors, he gets paid appearance fees on top of prize money.

He is ranked 11th in the world, is a star on the US Ryder Cup team, and in a way is the Ilie Nastase of the golf world, the gifted star who turned heel when things went against him, the bad boy vs the good  guy that drove up attendances and ratings.

The problem is, Patrick crosses the unwritten law that is the tenant of the game of golf, the ultimate sin, he cheats to gain an advantage for himself as we all can see, then he denies it. In his DNA, at crucial times he crosses the line, he is the guy in your group who has the foot wedge.

However the PGA Tour and the European Tour endorse his behavior and reward him handsomely.

Players on both tours mutter amongst themselves, never point the finger when being peppered with questions from the media, and as far as any of us know, have got the guts to go up to Patrick, and say " I'm disgusted with you, I don't want to play with you because you cheat"

Baseball player's who scuff or grease the ball or cork their bats are screamed at by their opponents, card players who deal from the bottom get shot in the movies, hockey players who put too much curve on their sticks are penalized in front of everybody right there on the ice..

Golf, the gentleman's game relies on players calling penalties on themselves, it prides itself on a concept that doesn't exist in any other sport.

None of the current membership should be put in a position to publicly call out one of their own. Nor should officials, referees working in play during a round without the use of instant replay, like referees in other sports.

Here's what we want to happen, here's what should happen.

Keith Pelley, or Jay Monahan in conjunction with the Players rules committee have to make the tough call, announce to the world what everybody thinks, that on Saturday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance, Patrick Reed quickly picked up his golf ball without showing it to his fellow players or volunteers, or even the camera man right behind him thus removing the evidence, fiddled around in the ground possibly to increase the indentation, before the official he called over to back up his claim could arrive and make any other decision, and as such appeared to take advantage of the trust afforded him as a professional golfer to improve his lie.

He may not have broken the new rules, but he certainly broke the spirit of them and the game itself.

As such his membership should be suspended.

But it won't ever happen without absolute proof positive, will it.
