June Rogers has been a season seat holder for the Toronto Maple Leafs for over 65 years. In 1946 with the help of Red Horner she bought 2 seats in the Greens for .25 per seat!!
She now is in the final stages of Alzheimers and barely recognizes familiar faces and people within her family.
However, when the TML are playing and the family says "he scores" she sits up and focuses on the TV and begins to clap. She is fully awake and ready to go whenever puck drops, particularly when Don Cherry comes on Coaches Corner, and in order to show her dedication to being a fan, the family have decorated the whole house in blue and white and have Leafs memorabilia all over so that when she comes home from her program she recognizes her home or as its known in her Scarborough neighbourhood "The fan zone".
Granddaughter Jennifer and daughter Leslie are June's loving caregivers and decided to enter her in Sportnet's Greatest Leaf contest, and she made it down to the final seven
Yesterday, after an anxious day sitting by their phones, Jennifer got the call to say that June had won !!!
" I can't believe it, I can't stop crying I'm so happy for her !" said an emotional Jennifer in a phone interview .."Now all of Canada will know what we have for years "
The family's house is a landmark in Scarborough, strangers stop and ask Leslie or Jennifer to take their picture amongst all the Leaf displays.
For the win the family will receive $10,000 badly needed to help June with her daily care..
