Wells Fargo Championship
Quail Hollow Club
Charlotte, North Carolina
Canadians Mike Weir MC 7173, Stephen Ames MC 74 73, David Hearn T65 70,72, 76,71 +1Sunday UPDATE.. The leader after 3 rounds is Webb Simpson at -14 after his 69 on Saturday followed by DA Points 68 and Ryan Moore 69 a shot back at -13, but the story for me is world #2 Rory McIlroy 66 to get to -12 with a real chance to win his 2nd title at Quail Hollow. Another young gun Rickie Fowler 67 is in a group at -11.
FINAL UPDATE.. " When I walked by his hotel room this morning it was humming " said Sir Nick Faldo referring to Rickie Fowler's electric wardrobe. Wearing his traditional PUMA neon orange pants and shirt, Fowler shot 69 to get to -14 then watched both DA Points 71 and Rory McIlroy 70 miss putts to win on 18, putting them all in a three way playoff.
Fowler hit a big drive, then stuffed a wedge from 133 yards inside 4 feet for a birdie 3 and his first PGA Tour win, as Rory and DA could only make par.
It was a treat to watch a big part of the future of this game in McIlroy and Fowler playing so well. I am glad Rickie won, PUMA will sell another gazillion of his over sized hats, and the confidence he has now received should help take his game to the next level, and don't forget he and Rory will be at each other, in all likely hood, at Medinah this year in the Ryder Cup.
For those who tuned out as soon as you know who missed the cut, it was compelling, exciting golf right until the last putt, on a beautiful but difficult Quail Hollow property, thank goodness they both have 30 years of battles ahead of them, just what the tour needs.
