Dustin Johnson proves Gary Player right with "shot of the year"

In an interview with Bob Weeks and myself back in 1995 on our Fairways show Gary Player was on one of his favourite topics...the state of today's golf ball. He got everyone's attention when he said " Bryan one day soon players will be hitting drives over 400 yards, making par 4's obsolete" He was right...

On the par four 435 yard 12th on the Plantation Course in Kapalua big hitting Dustin Johnson hit his drive 433 yards finishing up just inches from the hole, on his way to winning the Tournament of Champions by 8 shots..

It will likely be the shot of the year, in fact Brandel Chamblee is calling it the "greatest shot ever".

Granted this course with its prevailing trade winds and undulating fairways is prone to long shots given the right conditions, nonetheless for it to be that long and that straight is prodigious and for it to roll right up to the cup is spectacularly fortunate.

DJ is one of the longest of the long in pro and top amateur golf and has a resume full of mind boggling shots.

So do we simply continue to rave while these guys render perfectly good regular tour courses down to par 68s, driving the ball over or around all the hazards designed to challenge them or should we like every other pro sport, standardize the ball so everyone of them plays with the same Wilson or Calloway or whatever one that is selected..

I must admit I'm torn between the 2 camps..where do you stand. ?

Bryan
