GB & Ireland rout USA 16.5 - 9.5 at Walker Cup

It is the time of the golf season for Cup play, the Fed Ex Cup on the PGA Tour, the Solheim Cup in Germany next week for the best women from Europe and USA, the Presidents Cup next month in South Korea, but this week it's the world's best amateurs from GB & Ireland and the USA for the Walker Cup

Going into today's play Great Britain and Ireland had a 7-5 lead over United States at this 45th edition on the windy links of Royal Lytham and St Annes not far from Blackpool in NW England and this morning so far Ashley Chesters and Jimmy Mullen secured another point for the hosts with a 3&2 win over Americans Beau Hossler and Denny McCarthy to make the score 8-5 then Paul Dunne and Gary Hurley beat Mike McCCoy and Scott Harvey 1up, 9-5. Next up for GB&Ireland Cormac Sharvin and Jack McDonald beat Hunter Stewart and Lee McCCoy 2up 10-5 before Bryson DeChambeau and Robby Shelton beat Gavin Moynihan and Jack Hume 3&2, 10-6 going into the afternoon singles

The USA played hard in the afternoon singles and needed a miracle comeback, but GB&Ireland won 5 matches and halved 3 for 6.5 points and a decisive 16.5 - 9.5 trouncing of the cup holders, atoning for the 17-9 loss to the USA at the National Golf Links of America in New York two years ago. It is the worst drubbing the Americans have taken in the history of the Walker Cup..
