Scheffler arrest hysteria all a big mistake..

 PGA Championship : Tee Times

For 25 years I attended many golf tournaments with our Fairways golf show @Fan590 always very early (6am or earlier) when just grounds crews security, paid police and a few PGA officials would be up and working, most of my time was broadcasting at the RBC Canadian Open.

Without proper credentials you make it difficult for yourself and the guys guarding the property to do their jobs.

I have been chased by volunteer parking officials in golf carts as I tried to get parked with equipment near the media tent without the VIP pass, and often only my cheerful countenance, and the tournament directors cell phone number handy, saved the day.

So when I saw pre 7am this morning, Scottie Scheffler had a run in with police as he was entering Valhalla, had been arrested and charged, it was no big surprise given the circumstances, not with standing the death of a vendor hit by a shuttle bus,  and also we all hear the horror stories of police over the top reaction to anyone who disobeys them.

By 9am it was all over, charges and the issue dropped, a cop who didn't know Sheffler with a red face, the ESPN+ hysteria died down.

All this would have been avoided with an iota of calmness and common sense in the early hours.

Here is his statement.

"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today. Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective."

Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Scheffler was released on his own recognizance and arrived at Valhalla Golf Club at 9:12 a.m. ET.

Rory could be the story after opening T4 66...full leaderboard

 PGA Tour : Leaderboard

Rory McIlroy was left grateful for some excellent scrambling and a slice of good fortune as he put himself in a strong position after round one of the US PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy

The Northern Irishman arrived at Valhalla Golf Club among the favourites to claim a fifth Major Championship after a brilliant recent run of form.

He had won in his last two starts on the PGA TOUR to add to the Hero Dubai Desert Classic title he claimed in January and also looked to have fate on his side, having arrived at this golf course off the back of two wins ten years ago when he won his last Major.

But the World Number Two’s round was in danger of falling apart when he followed two early birdies with a bogey on the 17th and a tee-shot into the water on the 18th, a fate he famously avoided by a few feet in the final round a decade ago.

However, after taking a penalty drop and pitching out on to the fairway, McIlroy hit a superb approach to seven feet to save par and then hit the pin with his second shot on the next to set up a short-range birdie.

“That was huge,” McIlroy admitted. “I could have easily bogeyed 18 and been back to even par, and then that ball on one could have hit the flagstick and went anywhere. I could have made bogey from that.

“Potentially being one over par through ten, I’m two under so it’s a three-shot difference. It’s a big swing.”

The 35-year-old made the most of that swing with a hat-trick of birdies from the fifth, including a chip-in on the sixth, to card a 66, the same score with which he opened when lifting the Wanamaker Trophy in 2014.

“I thought I got a lot out of my game today," he said. "Some good up-and-downs, the chip-in on six.

“I had a little bit of a scrappy part around the turn there. Not really happy with how I played but at least happy with the score.”

Schauffele breaks record with 62 at soft Valhalla...live leaderboard

 PGA Championship : Leaderboard

Xander Schauffele equalled the lowest score in men’s Major Championship history for the second time in 11 months in the first round of the 106th US PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club.

Xander Schauffele

Schauffele took advantage of ideal conditions for the early starters to fire nine birdies in a stunning 62, matching the mark set by Branden Grace in the 2017 Open Championship and equalled by Rickie Fowler and Schauffele himself in the opening round of last year’s U.S. Open.

Starting from the tenth, Schauffele made birdies at the 11th, 13th, 15th, 16th and 18th to reach the turn in 31 and picked up further shots on the second, fourth and fifth.

A two-putt birdie on the par-five seventh took the Olympic Champion to nine under par and he safely parred the final two holes to break the course record of 63 set by José María Olazábal in 2000.

“It feels great,” Schauffele said. “It’s just day one but if someone had said I was going to shoot nine under I would certainly have taken it.

“I’ve been playing some really good golf, having a lot of close calls, so me and my team say why not keep chugging along?

“I’m very happy with the way I played but I can’t really think much more about it, just got to go and tee it up again tomorrow.”

He watched Rory play 8 holes 8 under par at Quail Hollow on Sunday to beat him by 5 shots so you can imagine his caution.

PGA Championship : Weather update...live scoreboard

 PGA Championship Leaderboard

There was a 10 minute fog delay to the start of this 106th Championship. Here is a complete forecast provided by pgatour..com. Follow all the scoring by clicking on my link above...

Weather also played a role at the Masters... remember?

Article image

The weather played a prominent role at the 2014 PGA Championship, the last time the year’s second major was hosted at Valhalla Golf Club. Rory McIlroy won his fourth major championship while racing against darkness after torrential rain flooded the course and caused delayed tee times in the final round.

The weather may again play a factor at this week’s PGA Championship, with rain forecasted to arrive at Valhalla as early as Monday evening and remain in the area for several days.

Thursday's forecast looks pleasant overall, with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Temperatures should reach 80F, with winds W-SW, 5-10 mph, and perhaps a passing light shower between 5 and 7 p.m.

Thunderstorms could arrive overnight, making for a potentially soggy Friday.

  • Friday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, 90% chance of rain. Low: 62F, High: 72F. Winds: S-SW 10-15 mph. Projected .50 to .75 inches of rainfall.
  • Saturday: Chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, 40% chance of rain. Low: 62F, High: 78F. Winds: E-NE 4-8 mph. Projected .20 to .30 inches of rainfall.
  • Sunday: Partly cloudy and warm, 20% chance of rain. Low: 62F, High: 84F. Winds N-NE, 10-15 mph.

PGA Championship :: Thursday TEE Times

 PGA Championship Tee Times

It's not the strongest field with PGA Club pros in the mix, but a major all the same the PGA Championship at Valhalla GC in Kentucky..

Koepka trophy

Koepka from LIV is the defending champion, Scheffler a new dad is the bookies favourite with back to back winner Rory McIlroy a close second, and a winner at Valhalla in 2017.

There are your big3, but there are six Canadians, eight swedes, twins from Denmark and a myriad of stories to follow in this 150 man field with a cut after 36 holes.

Tiger is playing for obvious reasons, he will always be a ratings bonanza, as he has already "been there done that" . Making the cut would be a big deal for him.

Canadian TEE TIMES

7.48 1st  Adam Svensson, Zac Oakley,  Ryo Hisatsune

7.59 1st  Adam Pendrith, Adam Hadwin, Martin Kaymer

8.21 1st  Corey Conners, Nick Dunlap, Adam Schenk

9.10 10th  Nick Taylor, Kanaya Talumi, Sepp Straka

3.57 10th  Mac Hughes, Luke List, Austin Eckroat

Weather for Louisville

There is rain in the forecast today, especially Friday and some on Saturday Sunday sunny, 31*c humid. I don't see winds above 12kph any day, but they will change direction as the fronts move through.
