Tears of sorrow fell, birdie putts didn't...Europe's sad story at Ryder Cup 2020.. final scoreboard

Ryder Cup : Final wrap.

With a Thursday - Sunday night shift behind me, I was reflecting this morning on what a wash out this year's Ryder Cup was for me along with millions of European fans around the world, not to mention the players themselves.

Your 43rd #RyderCup

Due to work I only got to see the Thursday singles, and despite a spirited opening match from Sergio and Jon Rahm, it was clear things were not right when Rory and Poulter lost the first 5 holes outright to the brilliant/deadly pairing of Patrick Cantley and Xander Schauffele, who will be a staple for their USA team for years.

The putts weren't falling, Lee Westwood/ Matt Fitzpatrick had half a dozen putts at least, to win holes against Koepka and Berger, that just didn't fall as did Paul Casey/ Victor Hovland in their loss to Johnson/ Morikawa.

The trend continued in the afternoon 4balls and down 6-2 Thursday night, the writing was on the wall.

Sunday's singles were over before they started, the jubilant Americans had it all going their way to the obnoxious delight of some of their rudely behaved fans, they won 8 out of 12 points and the 19-9 drubbing was mercifully over.

Rory's confidence took an ass kicking, Europe's main man only managed a point and you all saw his tearful, heartbroken greenside interview after winning his singles 3&2 over Schauffele.

It may seem a small thing but on their very first hole in  Thursday's foursomes after Poulter silenced the crowd with a rocket of a drive right down the middle of the fairway, Rory had 97 yards to the pin and pulled the wedge left and short, in fact missed the green, 25 feet away, while Schauffele knocked his hole high to 6 feet and Cantley converted. You could see Rory shake his head, off to another of those negative starts that have resulted in poor rounds throughout his storied career.

In the end none of the numbers are good for Europe, and naturally are great for a formidable young American squad, but in my opinion Europe's performance to a man wasn't as bad as the final score, the biggest drubbing since the Seve era began in 1979.

The team that makes the most putts wins all these International matches, Europe didn't and the Americans did, and deserve their plaudits for a famous victory.

The bitter tears of sorrow fell, but the putts didn't would be my way of summing it all up, and as Shane Lowry said after losing 4&2 to US Player of the Year, Patrick Cantley " I know it doesn't look good, and we're surely taking a load of stick back home about pairings and all, but I'm not giving up and this has been the best year of my life, I'm loving every minute of it"

Imagine how good he and all the young guns will feel when they regroup and show up again in Rome two years from now.

USA wins Friday Foursomes 3-1 at Ryder Cup.. live scoreboard

Ryder Cup:  Friday Morning Foursomes

7.05 Spieth/Thomas vs Rahm/ Garcia 3&1

7.20 Johnson/ Morikawa 3&2 vs Casey/Hovland

7.40 Koepka/Berger 2&1 vs Westwood/Fitzpatrick

7.50 Schauffele/ Cantley 5&3 vs McIlroy/ Poulter

It was a sunny cool calm start this morning, an all American crowd packed around the 1st tee at Whistling Straits for this 43rd edition of the Ryder Cup.

Justin Rose and Jon Rahm of Europe celebrate after winning The Ryder Cup during singles matches of the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National on September 30, 2018 in Paris, France.

Europe is defending and will need 14 points to retain the cup

Sergio and Rahm stood arm in arm as the crowd booed their arrival, the sun straight in the players face. Garcia bombed his drive into a difficult lie in a fairway bunker, Thomas shorter but in the fairway,

Rahm chipped out to the back of the green, Spieth left his partner 12 feet hole high. Sergio almost rolled  his approach in, and Thomas looking nervous missed his wide right all the way. So they halved the first to start this mornings foursomes..

Looking at all these great players and their pairings I must say that Cantley/Schauffele looked to be the two guys I wouldn't want to play, Cantley with no cap is all business, and very good business at that and Schaufele just doesn't make many mistakes.

They have won the first 3 holes,

Follow all the action on my blue scoring link above..

update: USA has just won the Friday morning foursomes 3-1. Rory McIlroy/ Ian Poulter thrashed 5&3 after losing the first 5 holes to Cantley / Schauffle.

Henrik Stenson named the 5th Vice Captain of European Ryder Cup team..

European Captain Pádraig Harrington has announced that Henrik Stenson will be the fifth and final Vice Captain for Team Europe in the 2020 Ryder Cup, which gets underway at Whistling Straits next Friday.

Getty Images: Henrik Stenson

The 2016 Open Champion will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to Harrington’s backroom team in Wisconsin having played in five of the biennial contests against the United States (2006, 2008, 2014, 2016 and 2018); being on the winning side on three of those five occasions.

During that time, the two-time European Tour Number One amassed 11 points for Europe from 19 matches, including a 100% record of three wins out of three during his last outing at Le Golf National in 2018 where he rounded out his perfect week with a 5&4 singles victory over Bubba Watson. He also secured the winning point for Europe on his debut at The K Club, in Ireland, in 2006 where he beat Vaughn Taylor 4&3.

It will be Stenson’s first stint as Vice Captain and the 45 year old Swede will join his compatriot Robert Karlsson, Englishman Luke Donald, Germany’s Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland in the role. Between them the quintet boasts the experience of 19 Ryder Cups for Europe and 40 points scored.

Stenson said: “It’s a great honour to get the call and to be involved with Team Europe. I’ve been part of five Ryder Cup teams in the past and to be given the opportunity as a Vice Captain to help Europe’s quest to retain the Ryder Cup is exciting.

“Pádraig called me on Monday morning and it was not a long conversation. I accepted straight away and I assured him that myself, along with the other Vice Captains, are there to help and assist him and the team in any way we can.

“We have a very strong team. It’s a mix of huge experience along with three guys who will take on their first Ryder Cup – and that’s a great combination. We have strength in depth so I’m looking forward to getting out there and seeing the boys perform.

“It’s no secret that winning on away soil is always a little bit harder, but the boys are ready for that challenge. It’s all going to come down to how well we play during the week but I have every faith in our team.”

Pádraig Harrington, European Ryder Cup Captain, said: “I am delighted to add Henrik Stenson to our backroom team as a Vice Captain. Following on from Sunday when the 12 players were confirmed, we now have Team Europe complete and I could not be happier.

“Henrik will bring so much to the week in all aspects both on and off the course. His playing record speaks for itself and he has the full respect and confidence of all the players. He knows what it takes to win a Ryder Cup and that experience and knowledge will be crucial for us.

“Everyone is aware that the Ryder Cup can be a tense week at times too so Henrik’s renowned wit and sense of fun will benefit our team room immensely. It will also be helpful to have the cool head of the ‘Ice Man’ around should any stressful situation emerge.”

The 43rd Ryder Cup will be played at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin from September 24-26 where Europe will aim to retain the trophy they won 17 ½ - 10 ½ at Le Golf National in France in 2018.
