Graham DeLaet birdied 4 holes in a row on his front nine to share the early lead at the Shell Houston Open. He has added another on the back and shot -5 67 T6, 2 shots off the lead held by Dustin Johnson and Roberto Castro with who are finished with -7 65

Perth council vote to save the world's oldest golf course..the North Inch
I was born in Perth, Scotland in St Johnstone Nursing Home as a posh treat for my mother, who objected to having her #1 son with the traditional midwife, in the cottage at the foot of the Buckie Braes and Craigiehill GC where my father and his family had lived since the end of WWI. We came to Canada when I was a few months old.
That cottage was where my love of the game began. I spent hours of my bi-annual summer trips with my mother back to Scotland on a little 4 hole putting green grandad had made in the back garden. Later in life during a return to Perth to attend university in Dundee. I played golf, often two rounds a day, on the little golf course built along the river Tay on the North Inch.
An Inch is a Scottish word from the Gaelic "innis" meaning island. Perth is sometimes called the smallest city in the world because it is built between two inches - the North Inch and the South Inch on the river Tay.
I would skip classes in Dundee, wait for the attendant to leave the starters hut for lunch during the week at 1130am and sneak onto the 2nd tee to avoid the 50 pence green fee (1972), then play around the flat but scenic course for hours with 2 balls, in all weather usually by myself or sometimes with others I'd join up with.
That's how I learned to play. It's open to anyone, http://www.northinchgolf.co.uk/ and the green fee is up to 15 pounds during the week.. Have a look a the beautiful scenery on the link. It's a par 68, at 5154 yards.
I had heard the city council like so many were looking to slash their budget and the North Inch where the game has been played since the 1500s was on their list.
But after a storm of protest, councillors have voted on a 6 year rescue plan which it is hoped will preserve the famous sporting venue. King James VI played on " North Inch Golf Course " in the 1500s, and Beasley’s World Atlas of Golf names it “the first recognisable golf course in the world”.

Looking back I was so lucky to have access to this little gem, I have travelled and played all over Canada, the States and the UK and made life long friends wherever I have gone.
So well done Perth and Kinross Council and to all the volunteers that are making sure many others will continue without prejudice to be able to play at very reasonable rates on the North Inch....and if you are short a few quid, just wait til the starter goes for lunch !

Tony Finau, from his garage to the winners circle in Puerto Rico

Tony Finau is from Salt Lake City in Utah and as a very athletic 6'4" guy has basketball in his blood. He was a star in high school and his cousin is Jabari Parker of the Milwaukee Bucks.
However he also loved to hit golf balls. The problem was, his parents couldn't afford a membership, or even buckets of balls. So his father set up a mattress in the garage where Tony could pound away for hours on end.
Now this long hitting 26 year old can buy all the balls he wants after he won the Puerto Rico Open for his first PGA Tour title, beating Steve Marino with a birdie on the third hole of a playoff at the very plush but windy Coco Beach resort.
Finau and Marino each shot -2 70 to finish at -12 276. Marino birdied the 18th to tie Finau, and got into the playoff when Finau narrowly missed a 6-foot birdie putt. Ian Poulter closed with a 72 and had a 20 footer on the 18th to get into the playoff which he missed after taking the lead into the final round.
Nick Taylor had a great week closing with -2 70, T5 -10 while Graham DeLaet had a -1 71 -8 total T11. Young Adam Svensson shot +1 73 and finished T47.

The boy from Beaudesert Australia, son of Alvin and Dening Day, brother of Yanna and Kim, prodigy of his mentor and caddie Col Swatton is where he has dreamt of being since Alvin enrolled him at the local golf course as a six year old, "on top of the world"..
Jason Day holed a clutch par putt on the 18th to edge Rory McIlroy 1up in a very even semi final match, on a cool windy Texas morning, then got up early on sweet swinging Louis Oosthuizen and beat him soundly 5 and 4 to win for the second consecutive week and put an exclamation mark beside his world #1 ranking.
"It’s been a memorable week, not only to win the Dell Match Play but to get back to No. 1 in the world,” Day said afterwards to the assembled media.
It was a great week for Oosthuizen as well, who knocked out Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson on Saturday and Rafa Cabrera Bello on Sunday morning but after winning the first hole against Day his putter let him down. "I couldn’t buy a birdie, I played OK, but nothing spectacular. Up against a guy like Jason, you need to play 3 or 4 under to have a chance"
Rafa as he is known to his peers, beat Rory 3 and 2 in the consolation match and remember he has moved into the top 50 in the world ranking to earn a trip to the Masters.
Rory had nothing to be ashamed of, he defended his title well, and had the lead several times in his match with Day, so he is in good form heading to Augusta.
Speaking of the Masters, Day is now the bookies favourite, you may remember he and fellow Aussie Adam Scott who also won in back to back weeks earlier this month, T2 to Charl Schwartzel in 2011, then he had a one-shot lead with three holes to play in 2013, ending up 3rd behind Scott and Cabrera.
In Canada we all remember the run he went on last year starting with his win at the RBC Canadian Open followed by his first major, the PGA Championship.
Supported by his mentor and caddie Col Swatton, American wife Ellie and his children Dash and Lucy, he has a wonderful home in Westerville Ohio and all the money he can ever spend....Like I said he's "on top of the world"
