Mike Weir T1 at Insperity Invitational.. 36 hole leaderboard..

PGA Tour Champions : Insperity Invitational Leaderboard

It's been a while since I could tell you Mike Weir has had a share of the lead heading into a Sunday at a golf tournament.

However he loves playing this Woodlands CC where he won the 36 hole version of this Insperity Invitational in 2021, and with rounds of 65 70 -9 he is T1 with the Goose, Retief Goosen 68 67 -9 heading into today's finale.

In this his 89th start, he is looking for his 2nd win. He and Goosen have been Presidents Cup teammates on 5 occasions, and of course Weirsy was the teams captain last year.

It's his first time in the final pairing in 6 outings this season.

However the pack is jammed up behind these two, 10 players are within 4 shots, including Miguel Jimenez and YE Yang at -8.

The Sunday Story : Scheffler strolls to CJ Cup Byron Nelson.. 54 hole scoreboard,,,

PGA Tour : CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2025...Leaderboard

There are many, veteran golf scribes included, that can find regular weekly pro golf tournaments boring to watch, slow action, especially in this day and age of instant gratification.

However when it gets enthralling is when the human element combined with an Agatha Christie whodunnit story line, throw in some National pride, a David vs Goliath plot, a hero vs a villain, gets involved.

Enter the Ryder, Solheim, Presidents, Walker Cups and suddenly you have 3 days of the most compelling sport anywhere.

Enter Tom Watson and Stewart Cink at Troon in 2009, Tiger and Bob May 2000 PGA, or Hale Irwin and Mike Donald 1990 US Open at Medinah for examples.

However this week the CJ Cup Byron Nelson is one of those void of any such drama, with Scottie Scheffler playing on his home course, TPC Craig Ranch where he competed  as a 14 year old, playing like he's at a stress free Monday morning match with his pals, already -23 through 54 holes (61 63 66), 8 shots clear of a rank and file week with 18 to play on Sunday.

This ends the story for this week, unless you are upset that he is skipping next week's $20,000,000 signature event in Philadelphia, before returning to play the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. He has a busy schedule ahead, and of course money hasn't been an issue for the Scheffler's for a while,,,

Canadians with the cut falling at -5

Mac Hughes 65 73 -4 MC

Taylor Pendrith 67 71 -4 MC

Adam Svensson 67 72 -3 MC

Ben Silverman 71 72 MC

As forecast, and I can say as usual, bad weather dominated Friday at this Insperity Invitational at the Woodland GC just north of Dallas.

As a result after a long delay, nobody has completed their 1st round.

However the weather has cleared for the weekend, so an early start for everyone to complete round1 at 8.45am ET

Scheffler cruising, Play suspended CJ Cup.. partial results

PGA Tour : CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2025..  Leaderboard

Mother Nature was dominating the weather in the Dallas to Houston area of Texas, Scottie Scheffler is back to his old self, dominating the field at this TPC Craig Ranch course playing easy after all the rain, with 61 63 -18 to lead by 6 through 36 holes.

There were 8 withdrawals this year, players likely noting the notorious weather pattern at this time of year.

Next week is the signature event which used to be the Wells Fargo at Quail Hollow. This year it will be at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, Wissahickon Course new this year by the local Truist Bank so all the big names who are off this week will return, and then the following week is the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.

However half of the field will return this Saturday morning to complete or just start their 2nd rounds before a cut can be made making it a long day for some.

note **** approximate round 3 starting time will be between 1pm-3pm on Saturday

WEATHER

The system bringing all the bad weather to this part of Texas has blown through, players will enjoy sunny skies for the weekend, breezy 16-24kph from N on Saturday, ideal on Sunday.

Canadians

Mac Hughes T26  65, only played 5 holes rd2

Taylor Pendrith T62 67 71 -4

Adam Svensson T80 67 only play 3 holes rd2

Ben Silverman T120 71 only played 3 holes rd2.

EDIT ***** Rain soaked TPC Craig Ranch torched, Taylor Pendrith defending champion.. full scoreboard

PGA Tour : The CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2025.. Leaderboard

EDIT ***** Play in round 2 has been suspended at 9.46am due to lightning in the area

Defending champion, Canada's Taylor Pendrith led 4 Canadians into action at this week's CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2025, with an opening -4 67

With most of his elite competition elsewhere this week, owgr #1 Scottie Scheffler led the demolition of the rain soaked par 71, TPC Ranch course in McKinney, Texas with a front nine 29 (5 birdies, an eagle in 7 holes) then continued enjoying his day with 3 more birdies coming in with 32, bogey free -10 61

If he wanted some practice for the upcoming majors, he got it on Thursday, in an event named after a man, Byron Nelson, who won 18 of 30 events he played including 11 in a row during one of the war years, 1945.

The carnage continued behind him with only 28 players over par 71 as the course was soaked with 4" of rain that wiped out practice on Wednesday and continued to fall overnight.

Names you haven't heard in a while, Rico Hoey and Jhonattan Vegas T2 -8 63.

There were 7 with 64's, 8 with 65's and 20 more with 66's,  you get the picture.

WEATHER

More bad weather is expected today. McKinney is 30 miles north of downtown Dallas which is a 3 hour drive south to Houston where the PGA Champions Tour is this week.

Both are expecting an 80% chance of rain and Thunderstorms later today.

Canadians

Mac Hughes T11 -6 65

Adam Svensson, Taylor Pendrith T39 -4 67

Ben Silverman T117 E 71.

Past champion Mike Weir returns to Insperity Invitational.. Bad weather report

PGA Tour Champions: Insperity Invitational..  Field

Pro golf returns to the Woodlands CC north of Houston which just hosted the LPGA major the Chevron Championship.

This week it's the Senior circuit, for the 17th version of the often weather delayed Insperity Invitational with Scott Dunlap the defending champion, after just 36 holes. Rain washed out play on Friday and Sunday in 2024.

Another former champion is Mike Weir in 2010, when once again the event was reduced to 36 holes. He T6 here last year.

Fred Funk who won in 2012 and rarely plays anymore, will return to play his 1000th event on the PGA and Champions Tours.

In 2017 Bernhard Langer opened with a record 62 and went on the set the scoring record for 54 holes -25 191.

As well as the 78 players this year, Jack, Gary, Lee, Tom and Annika amongst other greats will play a little 9 hole scramble on Saturday called the Folds of Honour Greats of Golf.

WEATHER

The forecast has 80% chance of rain, TStorms on Friday afternoon with the wind S 23 gusting to 34kph, and 100% in the evening, so perhaps another soggy start.

Saturday partly sunny 23*c, 20% chance of rain, wind N 14kph and Sunday 27*c sunny, wind NE 10kph.

Full tee times to follow...
