Weeekend wrap.. Final scoreboards..

PGA Tour
http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/rbc-canadian-open/leaderboard.html

There are guys on tour who's putter is taller than Tim Clark, but the little South African who lives in Scottsdale has proven he can  play with the best when he is on his game. 64,65 over the weekend proved just enough to edge out Jimmy Furyk (69) to win our national championship at -17 263 for only his 2nd PGA Tour win.

Listed at 5'7" he isn't very long off the tee, but this week featured a snappy short game and clutch putting to hold off the charging pack who were taking advantage of the soft conditions at Royal Montreal.Clark birdied 5 of the last 8 holes to close the deal. Justin Hicks was third at 13 under after a 64. Matt Kuchar (65), Michael Putnam (66) and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (66) tied for fourth at 11 under.

Graham DeLaet was the top Canadian, closing with a 68 to tie for seventh at 10 under, Brad Fritsch ended up at -9.

Since starring in college at North Carolina State where he won the US Public Links in 1997 and was twice the NCAA East player of the year he has endured several injuries including bulging discs in his neck, but told us all during the week he has been swinging and playing better recently, and went out and showed us all how much better this week.

CHAMPIONS Tour

Colin Montgomerie never won a major in his illustrious pro career, coming into this week he was the winner of two in a row and in the end he finished 2nd at -5 !..and he wasn't the story ! Bernhard Langer absolutely lapped the field, maybe twice as he played Royal Portcawl and the wind like a fiddle while all the rest were strumming on their banjo's..

He won by 13 shots adding a closing 4-under 67 Sunday to his earlier rounds of 65-66-68 for an 18-under 266. Langer’s 13-stroke win is the largest margin of victory in a senior major, beating Hale Irwin’s 12-stroke win in the Senior PGA Championship in 1997 as they played in 4 rare days of sunshine on the Welsh coast.

At -2 Canada's Rick Gibson T3. Rod Spittle claimed a 21st place finish carding 70 in the final round, and 291 for the tournament.

Carlota Ciganda breezed to an early victory to set the tone and Spain won all four of its singles matches Sunday to capture the inaugural International Crown.
Sweden finished second in the tournament that began Thursday with 32 players from eight countries. The top-seeded United States was among three teams eliminated Saturday, leaving five countries and 20 players to compete for the trophy

Points accumulated through Saturday were added to those amassed Sunday. Using the scoring system of two points for a win and one for a tie, the final order was: Spain (15 points), Sweden (11), South Korea (10), Japan (10), Thailand (9), United States (6), Taiwan (4) and Australia (3).

EUROPEAN Tour
http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2014/tournamentid=2014058/leaderboard/index.html

The Euro tour without many of it's stars rolled into Moscow and in the end it took a playoff to decide the winner. David Horsey sensationally forced and won a play-off with Damien McGrane to take the M2M Russian Open at Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club

The turning point came at the 17th where Horsey chipped in for eagle to catch McGrane

CANADIAN Womens Amateur
http://golfcanada.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/rcga14/event/rcga1415/contest/9/leaderboard.htm

Team Canada’s Augusta James ran away with the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship on Friday winning by six strokes after a final round 2-under 69 at Craigowan Golf and Country Club.

James showed that she was in command early, firing a 3-under 32 to open up her final round. Her front-nine came on the heels of Thursday’s record-setting performance where she carded the lowest round in the championship’s 101-year-old history with an 8-under 63.

Furyk bidding for 3rd Canadian Open

Rogers is pissing a lot of people off these days as they change over from analog to digital, and I personally would like to thank the two dolts working on our complex who decided to turn off all our services cable, phone, internet while they went home for the weekend.. Thanks to the guy who was left to do relief mop up work last night so that I can get back in touch with you again this morning..!!  Can't wait to fill out that email they send asking for your thoughts on their service..

Scrambling beautifully, Jim Furyk who won this championship in 2006 at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club and followed with a win in 2007 at Angus Glen in Markham, Ont., fired a bogey-free 65 in the third round at Royal Montreal to go to 15-under-par 195 and take a three-shot lead over South African Tim Clark, while crowd favourite Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask., saw his hopes sag with a three-putt on the 18th to fall seven strokes off the lead

A third win for Furyk would put him in a tie for second all-time with Tommy Armour (1927, 1930 and 1934), San Snead (1938, 1940 and 1941) and Lee Trevino (1971, 1977 and 1979). Leo Diegel won four titles in the 1920s

'Mr Big" leads in Montreal, Canuck amateur steals the show..

Several years ago I played in a pro-am at Diamondback GC up near Stouffville when the Nationwide Tour combined with our CPGA championship and we drew Tim Petrovic as our pro.

Never heard of him before but turned out he was a great guy with a beautiful sparkling new bag and clubs (black and silver) courtesy of his sponsors.. Srixon..

We went off mid afternoon and by the time we made the turn many of the field were already hard at the barbeque and beer and Tim sent his caddy into the clubhouse to buy some "candy bars" to keep him going on the back nine..

The caddy comes back with half a dozen " Mr Big's" which Petro starts to devour as we ride down the 10th..  " Mmmmmm these are good, can't get these in the States.." and his nickname was born.. "Mr Big"

Years later, 2006, I was broadcasting from the Hamilton GC the year Furyk won his first of back to back titles and I left a box of Mr Big's at his locker... I was in the gallery at the first when he teed off and as he started his walk down the fairway I shouted "hey Mr Big" and he turned with a big smile, gave me the thumbs up and I am sure he enjoyed a couple that day !

Well he and Web.com player of the year Micheal Putnam shot 64 yesterday to grab the first round lead on a beauty day ay Royal Montreal GC..Only tough pin placements and a little breeze kept the scores from being lower..

Team Canada member Taylor Pendrith, (Richmond Hill) who just drives it a mile stole the show however, averaging 298 straight yards off the tee (5th in stats) to T3 at 65..

I have been pulling 12 hour days at Canada Post this week, instead of taking my post in the media tent..(don't ask!!) so here is the missive from Golf Canada in case you missed it.

Soft Royal Montreal set to go under sunny skies..

Heavy rain yesterday has been replaced today and tomorrow with clear skies, sunshine and very little wind for today and tomorrow, there is rain in the forecast again for Sunday.

The RBC Canadian Open is about to get underway http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/rbc-canadian-open/leaderboard.html with as Jim Furyk said yesterday, "exactly the opposite conditions from last week's Open Championship.."

As we have seen in recent years ( Hamilton, St George's for example) even great old traditional courses are at the mercy of these guys when they are soft, so expect to see 62's 3's and 4's, hopefully one of the 19 Canadians will be in that kind of form..

Mike Weir is in the feature group with Luke Donald and Graeme McDowell at 110pm, all three sponsored by RBC...

So here we go again, follow me, your comments are welcomed as always..

Missing Montreal !!

I'm missing all my colleagues and pals at our annual get together at the Canadian Open as I can't go to Montreal this week, it's always one of the media highlights to catch up with Rube (Lorne Rubenstein), Perky (Dave Perkins) Hutch (Ian Hutchinson) Weeksy (Bob Weeks) Wilbur (Bill Paul) just to mention a few..

Normally I'd spend the weekend in the media room broadcasting our Fairways Golf show with Scott Metcalfe (680 News) and Weeksy when he was available after his duties with Scoregolf and TSN, and I'd ask all the guys to join us on air over the weekend... It mean't long days, in at 6am often not back home til 10pm.

We have had some hair raising experiences, usually weather related like the year in Hamilton where a river of water from a torrential downpour swept right through our location in the media tent, leaving us doing the show live, standing on chairs with 9 billion watts of electrical equipment beneath us and the torrent, until the tent was secured properly !...

Look, this great event, and it's RBC sponsor, led by Bill Paul (Tournament Director) may have the worst possible date (right after Open Championship and before a WGC event and the PGA Championship), and it is often faced with some volatile weather, but it is our national championship, thanks to Wilbur's efforts and the RBC player sponsorship money it has as strong a field as any regular PGA Tour stop, Els, Couples, Donald, Furyk, Snedeker, just to name a few.

Of course the main hope is that one of our Canadian's in the field will get hot and get in contention. Remember it was here during the President's Cup in 2007 that Weirsy beat Tiger in his singles match..a career highlight for sure..

I'll be covering it all here and you can here me on TSN1050 radio with my analysis on various shows, and for sure at 845am Sunday morning.

For a hole by hole look at The Royal Montreal Golf Club and the changes on its famed Blue course since it last held the RBC Canadian Open in 2001.

None could catch Rory..

Final scoreboard http://www.theopen.com/en/TheCourse.aspx

Sergio shot 66, Ricky played solid (67), holing putt after putt, others flashed up the leaderboard in spurts then fell away, there were 65's and 66's on an ideal day by the seaside at Hoylake on Sunday, but in the end none could catch Rory.

66 66 68 71 -17, "the gold medal winner and champion golfer of the year" had the  hammer all weekend, he could see what he had to do,he had it all in front of him and of course he had those 2 par 5's playing downwind at 16 and 18 as insurance.

His final round 71 therefore was not as spectacular as the previous 3, but it didn't need to be. He had a beautiful ball striking week, an under control draw he could trust over and over and he putted beautifully, including several clutch par savers from 10 feet or more and a few bombs like the 45 footer on 14 on Saturday that turned his round around... if you know what I mean..

He says he's happy these days, the break up with Caroline stung, but it was mutual, his mum was there in person for the first time at a major and he dedicated it to her. He has now won 3 different majors and he's just 25.

Rory is a shy guy, you can see that, at a party he'd be the one sipping pints with his mates out of the limelight. The demands thrust upon him from the media because of his shocking prowess are things he has had to learn to cope with, not something he chooses or seeks.

He's hard not to like, both on and off the course. He and Ricky and Sergio etal played the game like gentlemen, their admiration for each other afterwards was evident, what a great example in these days of me, me, me athletes..By the way what a difference in Sergio as he walked up 18, the runner up again paying heartfelt tribute to his adoring crowd... a far cry from the whining Sergio from years gone by..

This Open had some bad weather, but mostly when there was no golf being played and apart from the breeze that came up on Friday, the guys missed a bullet this week.

Today the crews move in to dismantle all the scaffolding and tear down the tented village, it will be a few days before the residents of Hoylake get their normal lives back again.... but it will be a lot longer before they forget the week none could catch Rory...

Open Championship Sunday.. Rory's to lose..

Live scoring click http://www.theopen.com/en/TheCourse.aspx

It's short shirt sleeve weather at Hoylake today, no rain so far, warm, and devoid of wind.

Rory tees off with his buddy and now neighbor in Florida, Rickie Fowler at 940am est . They have played together many times through the years back to Walker Cup matches. but this time Ricky spots Rory 6 shots, the rest of the field even more..

This championship many feel is a done deal, but I will watch the first 6 or 7 holes closely to see how it goes in honour of all those before who have squandered big leads and there have been too many to mention, hall of famers among them...

Remember Rory has had a bad round out of the four a lot recently, just because he has gotten by his Friday problems, it doesn't mean they won't come back on, say Sunday

The young guns in closest pursuit, Ricky, Sergio, Matteo, Dustin etal have nothing to lose and will be flag hunting... all the pressure is on Rory.

If he wins it will be expected, if he loses.... well let's not go there, for the sake of the young man... and indeed the game of golf..

Saturday Open Championship..Rory is the Story..

Play was well under way this morning at Royal Liverpool, as I wrote at 7am est or noon in Hoylake. There was some rain overnight, but the nasty stuff they forecast never arrived, it was calm, benign and warm, it did rain early but the umbrella's were soon put away...leaving ideal scoring conditions..

As a result of the forecast  the R&A had the field paired in three's and split them off 1 and 10 tees to save about 4 hours of playing time and sent them out early, completely I might add screwing up the boys from ABC/ESPN who as I tweeted had to scramble after the decision but were producing a refreshingly Tiger and Phil free broadcast. I was told that ESPN was producing a Tiger only broadcast on one of their outlets to compensate..

Rory started the day with a 4 shot lead -12 after a pair if 66's. He made a bogey on his opening hole and basically stayed at around par while Ricky Fowler ran off 4 birdies and at one point overtook Rory for the lead.

For me the turning point came at 14 where Rory holed a 50 footer for birdie after Ricky made bogey, the old 2 shot swing..Rory seemed to be released, on 16 he bombed a 350 yard drive. then smoked a 4 iron to within 20 feet and made the eagle. He flubbed a chip on 17 for bogey but then we say a replay of 16 on 18, where he made eagle again.

Ricky fell back, Dustin fell back...Rory was and is the story.. 66 66 68 -16 and a six shot lead going into Sunday, where he and Ricky are in the final group followed by the young guns... Garcia, Johnson, Dubuisson, Molinari, Manassero, Scott..

David Hearn is enjoying himself in his first Open championship, he shot 71 and is at -
As for Tiger (73 +3) and Phil (71 -1)...didn't see them play a shot, just like all the rest who are not in contention...and that's the way it should be..

Thursday Open Championship..Ideal scoring conditions

For all of you with British blood in your veins, you know how rare it is to get a dead flat calm sunny day at 25*c at the seaside.

That's is the scene at Hoylake, just south of Liverpool, huge crowds basking, the pictures don't really portray the sights, sounds and in particular the smell of the salt sea air...

The tide is coming in for the afternoon flight and the breeze will pick up a little but the leaderboard is great. http://www.theopen.com/

Brooks Koepka, and the Molinari brothers are in with -4 68's for the clubhouse lead. Rory is at -5 through 12 holes, Matteo Manassero has just joined him. Sergio, Jim Furyk are amongst a gaggle at -4 on course.

David Hearn is at -2 through 12 and Graham DeLaet is off at 1254..

Tiger made bogey's at 1 and 2 but has fought back and is at -2 as well through 15

BBC Open Championship broadcast available on line

If you are not a fan of the whole ESPN/ABC broadcast with all the constant promo's, Tigerfest, Paul Azinger / Curtis Strange all American bias..

Turn the sound down, leave the picture on then go on line to the official Open Championship link http://www.theopen.com/ and you will get the Warren Humphries, Gary Murphy broadcast, analysis, with the BBC feed..

While they keep throwing to 2 young women in studio who are enthusiastic, but inexperienced, one English, one American, the trade off is an uncluttered, much more unbiased production...

They did a nice interview with Monty, who of course has won the last 2 majors on the Champions Tour, going for 3 in a row at Royal Portcawl next week (Senior British Open)... he is calling for -6 to take the lead after today..

Wednesday Open Championship. Bookies hedging their bets..

Both the PGA Tour and since 2011, the European Tour have policies that prohibit players from gambling on tournaments. But at the Open, that didn't necessarily stop them from doing so in the past.Lee Trevino famously bet on himself before winning the 1971 Open Championship, placing 100 pounds at 14-1 odds.

This year players have apparently been asked to sign a waiver saying they wouldn't bet on themselves or anyone else...apparently caddies have not been asked to sign the waiver, although they are deemed to be an extension of the player..

Whatever the case, in the absence of a dominant Tiger, this year the bookies are hedging their bets. http://www.oddschecker.com/golf/open-championship/winner.

The world's top 3 are all at 16-1 Adam Scott, Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose. Rory McIlroy is at 20-1 while Tiger, Phil, Kaymer and Garcia are in at 25-1. Graeme McDowell is at 30-1

Here are the official world golf rankings
http://www.owgr.com/

tee times click here http://scores.theopen.com/en/TeeTimes.aspx

I set out to make a list of guys I thought could win placed on current form and am currently at 25 !! and I can make a case for all of them. Most of this is because of the absence of Tiger being the Tiger of the past, and also the fact that nobody else  is dominating like he did. Another factor is the venue. These players only play links golf a couple of times a year, so form on a typical parkland style course can go right out the window here.

So here are a few names for your Open Championship pools, and who I will expect to play well. perhaps even win..

First a word about the course. Royal Liverpool was burnt to a crisp in 2006, browned out, Jim Furyk said they were playing on dust by Sunday after a very dry spring. This year it was a wet spring, the fairways are green, the rough is up and lush, the course is firm and fast but no where near as fast as 2006 or last year are Muirfield where the fairways were running faster than the greens...

The weather as I said yesterday has no threatening wind and it is scheduled to blow from different directions over the four days anywhere from calm to 15kph. Pretty dry Thursday and Friday with rain moving in over the weekend. Warm, temps 22-26*c expected.

1. Justin Rose, in form wins at Congressional then last week in Aberdeen and playing beautifully right now, full of confidence and playing with house money. He has missed 3 of last 4 Open cuts, his putting stats show him taking 3-5 more putts per round on the slower Open Championship greens than those on the PGA Tour.

2. Adam Scott, at his peak, has been at Hoylake since last Thursday so should be ready, and of course has Steve Williams on his bag who won it here with Tiger in '06

3. Henrik Stenson lost the BMW 2 weeks ago in a playoff and after his career year in 2013 is back in form with nothing but top 10's in recent form.

4. Martin Kaymer  you just can't leave him out after wins at the Player's then the US Open, he along with Rosey are the hottest anywhere right now.

Now for a few you might not be considering.

5. Mikko Ilonen, a veteran Finn won the Irish Open impressively 3 weeks ago and he also won the British amateur championship on Royal Liverpool in 2000..

6. Thomas Bjorn is enjoying what the Brit's call a purple patch and at 43 is leading the Euro tour's Order of Merit and remember he was 3 shots ahead in 2003 with 4 holes to play at Royal St George's before dropping 4 shots. He was T3 at the BMW PGA then T8 at BMW International, had a top 25 last week in Aberdeen..May continue the trend of 40 something's winning the Open !

7. Graeme McDowell  big come from behind win at the French Open last week has given him a boost. He says this course suits him as a short hitter, and remember he led here for a while in 2006 before shooting 79 in his final round.

8. Miguel Jimenez just keeps getting better, now 50 and re married he has a new lease on life. 4th at the Masters, won the Spanish Open then the following week won on the Champions tour. Worth a flutter just to watch the warm up routine...

9. Angel Cabrera finally won a regular event on the PGA Tour, the Greenbrier 2 weeks ago then had a top 25 at Congressional. He drives the ball better than anyone when he is on and he proved that over and over in Virginia, but he doesn't need that length here, still he is one I'd pay to watch..

10. Sergio Garcia..6 top 10's in 10 starts this year on PGA Tour, T2 at Travelers last month and oh yes remember he was in the last group with Tiger here in 2006, shot 73 to Tiger's 67 while wearing an all canary yellow outfit which led Tiger to remark privately " I think I just bludgeoned Tweety!" Hey Sergio is happy these days with life, a new love Katharina Boehm, and Tiger is not in his way this time around, as he has been in all 60 majors El Nino has played so far..

And so many others...Rory, Tiger, Phil, Lee Westwood so often the bridesmaid, Shane Lowry, Zack and Dustin Johnson, Paul Casey, Kevin Stadler who blew the French Open, Bubba has all the shots, Scotsmen Gallagher and Warren both in form...

The list goes on and on, and that's why the bookies are hedging their bets !!

Rose blooming in mid summer...Open Championship report and pairings.

Phil Mickelson will start defending his Open Championship title on Thursday at 1405 (905am est) paired with 2012 winner Ernie Els and current Masters champion Bubba Watson when play gets under way at Royal Liverpool. Tiger Woods is off at 0904 (0404est) alongside Argentina's Angel Cabrera and European Tour Number One Henrik Stenson.

Woods and Mickelson will get the lion's share of attention, especially on this side of the Atlantic, however for me the favourite going into this 143rd Open Championship must be England's Justin Rose, who on Monday moved to #3 in the world following his magnificent triumph at the Scottish Open in Aberdeen last week, and he's paired with #1 Adam Scott and former US PGA Champion Jason Dufner.

In his presser at Hoylake he was asked if he had ever been in better form ahead of the Open ? "In 2010 you could argue I came in with as much form having won two events, but at the same time I was just beginning to play well then. Now I have been playing well for four or five years so am a lot more comfortable with the expectations this time around. In the past I have been looking for something extra to get into contention but right now I am not chasing the next level, I am beginning to trust my game

That's a telling quote for me, he's come such a long way from the 18year old amateur from Hook, who I interviewed on Fairways back in 1998 after he burst on the world stage with his T4th place finish to Mark O'Meara at Royal Birkdale.

After turning pro that week he went on to miss 22 cuts in a row, he couldn't drive the ball to save himself, lost his confidence, his Dad, he was wandering through the events on the European Tour without a rudder.."I just got way too resolved focus for a while and the pressure kept building and building and I felt like that I was having to try prove myself, and having to prove that The Open was not a flash in the pan.

He broke through in 2001 with 4 wins and won the Order of Merit on 2007 so the kid who broke 70 at the age of 11 was trending upwards as they say today..

Now he is a family man, he will turn 34 on July 30th. He married long-time girlfriend Kate Phillips, a former international gymnast, in December 2006. They have a house in Lake Nona, Florida, and a riverside flat in the London suburb of Putney. Kate gave birth to their first child, Leo, in February 2009 then in January 2012, they had a baby girl, Lottie.

He has been coached by our Canadian phenom Sean Foley since 2009, has spent over 35 weeks in the world's top 10 since 2007, but now at #3 with a US Open to go along his rent form, great driving, majestic iron play and a hot putter, you could say Rose is blooming in mid summer...

I have compiled a list of guys who are in form, any could win if it's their week and also a list of guys we just can't ignore...Tiger is in that group so stay with me here all week..

The all important weather forecast for Liverpool..Thursday dry, temperatures 23-25*c, Chance of showers, T'showers Friday, more so Saturday, same temperatures and slight chance of showers Sunday. There is no significant wind in the present forecast...

Great weekend for Canadians.. ...Final scoreboards all tours..

It was a nice little weekend for Canucks wasn't it, and in tennis and golf, not hockey ! Tip of my cap to Genie Bouchard, Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil (he and his partner Jack Sock actually beat the Bryan brothers in a 5 set marathon to win the Wimbledon doubles title..), Roger Sloan with a gutsy performance in storm ravaged Nova Scotia, and one you may have missed as Calgary's Rick Gibson who has married to and lived much of his adult life in the Phillipines, went out and got his first Senior Tour win, a remarkable wire-to-wire victory at the Bad Ragaz PGA Seniors Open carding a four under par 66 for a 195 total and a six shot victory over Denis O’Sullivan of Ireland and then dedicated the maiden European Senior Tour triumph to his late mother, his number one fan who he lost in March.

Great stuff, I have said all along the Milos will win Wimbledon one day, his big serve is such a weapon on grass, he's only 24, but you can see the difference between him and the top 4 after watching the Djokovic / Federer epic final. The Joker and Nadal, in particular are going to dominate for the next 5 years, which still gives Milos time to catch up to them..

Here is the weekend wrap...

Angel Cabrera won the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday for his first non-major victory on the PGA Tour, closing with his second straight 6-under 64 for a two-stroke victory over George McNeill. He finished at 16-under 264. McNeill, playing with a heavy heart because his elder sister is gravely ill, shot a season-best 61 for his fourth top-10 of the season. Third-round leader Billy Hurley III bogeyed four of the first six holes to fall out of contention. He shot 73 and finished in a seven-way tie for fourth at 9 under

Stephen Ames finished at 2-under 278 and tied for 52nd. David Hearn tied for 64th at even par 280

Stadler had to share second place with Thongchai Jaidee, who carded a 72. He still had a chance to win it on the last hole, but he missed a long birdie putt. He then failed to even force a playoff when he missed a three-footer for par

Matt Harmon kept the field at bay to capture his first PGA Tour Canada victory on Sunday, firing a final round 6-under 66 at Dakota Dunes Golf Links to win the SIGA Dakota Dunes Open presented by SaskTel. The 29-year old began the day with a five stroke lead and hardly gave his pursuers a chance, carding seven birdies on the day and never letting anyone get closer than within two shots

Web.com Tour
Nova Scotia Open
New Course
Halifax....
Roger Sloan is going to the PGA Tour next year! He won the Nova Scotia Open on Sunday for his first Web.com Tour title, holding his nerve and holing a 5-foot par putt on the first hole of a playoff with Derek Fathauer. The 27-year-old Sloan, a former Texas-El Paso player from Merritt, B.C., played 37 holes Sunday after high wind from Tropical Storm Arthur wiped out third-round play Saturday and closed with rounds of 71 and 70 to match Fathauer at 11-under 273 on Ashburn Golf Club’s New Course. Fathauer had rounds of 71 and 66.
Sloan earned $117,000 to push his season total to $149,303, which will be good enough to earn his card next year.
