Weather has already played a key role in this year's US Open and it doesn't start until Thursday.
Three inches of rain in 24 hours off tropical storm Andrea, plus the deluge that fell last week means this beautiful hilly little course at Merion will not be running firm and fast, rather soft and vulnerable, which in my opinion open it up to the field. It was so wet on Monday they cancelled the practice round in the afternoon
Remember most of the field has never played here, since the last US Open was David Graham's win in 1981, 32 years ago.
The rough is deep, thick and juicy, and cut right to the edge of the fairways and greens, but with 5 par 4's under 375 yards, these guys will be hitting irons off the tee and wedges into the greens which will negate but not remove the rough from the equation.
There is a 40% chance of rain and thunderstorms today, and 50% on Thursday with the worst of the unsettled weather pattern (tornadoes are in the forecast again across the mid west), but right now Saturday and Sunday look mostly sunny and warm.
In my opinion despite the fact the USGA will tuck pins to try and protect Merion's dignity, scoring will be low this year because the course is soft. Low scoring means anyone can win.
The US Open is supposed to be the sternest test of golf in America. It is their national championship, however mother nature may have other thoughts in mind..
