European Tour in Sicily: Rocco Forte Sicilian Open round 1

European Tour Rocco Forte Sicilan Open leaderboard http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2018/tournamentid=2018040/leaderboard/index.html#/leaderboard

This is the ninth country the European Tour has travelled to this 2018 season, the first time to Italy on the sun soaked island of Sicily for the Rocco Forte Sicilian Open where long hitting Alvaro Quiros will do his best to defend his title. The Rocco Forte Collection operates eleven hotels in Europe, Russia, northern Africa and the Middle East. Forte's family wealth in 2013 was listed as £250,000,000

The Verdura Golf has a stunning setting right down to the blue waters of the Mediterranean. With round 1 well underway Lucas Bjerregaard continued his recent return to form as he fired an excellent 65 to set the clubhouse target.

The big-hitting Dane has missed five of his first seven cuts this season but finished sixth at the Volvo China Open last month and only a play-off prevented him and team-mate Thorbjørn Olesen progressing to the knockout stages at last week's GolfSixes.

The 26 year old with a fear of flying, won the Portugal Masters for his first European Tour title last season and was trending in the right direction for number two, getting to -6 and leading the way by two from English trio Marcus Armitage, Daniel Brooks and Andy Sullivan, and Spaniard Scott Fernandez.

The lone Canadian in the field is Austin Connelly who has just posted an opening -1 70.
