Not so long ago there was a great Scottish pro called John Panton. John was often accompanied by his trusty golden retriever and as they walked the fairways John eschewed the conveniently placed yardage marker sticks ( 200yds, 150yds, 100yds etc) preferring to eyeball the shot, relying on his eyesight to judge the distance, and his knowledge and experience to gauge and calibrate all the other factors (wind, lie, pin placement, terrain etc) that would go into his shot selection. He managed to win the Scottish professionals championship 8 times, in his storied career which included a 3&2 win over Sam Snead in the 1967 World Seniors final using his eyeballing ability..
John passed away in July 2009 at the age of 92, and I know the news that follows will have him turning in his grave.!!!
