lpgatour.com
All week at the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer the focus was on the tough playing conditions. So leave it to a Hall of Famer to be the one to come out on top in Sunday’s final round. Karrie Webb started the day five shots behind second-round leader Shanshan Feng but fired a 3-under 68 to capture her 39th career LPGA Tour victory.

Webb got her day off to a hot start, making birdie on the second hole and following it up with an eagle on the par-5 third.

It was an emotional victory for Webb, who dedicated the win to her grandmother, Merion, who is currently in the hospital back in Australia.

Webb had tears in her eyes as she recounted the tale of her grandmother telling her just to win this week for her when they weren’t sure if her grandmother would make it through the week.

US Open qualifying...European group results

The road to the U.S. Open continues with sectional qualifying, the second and final stage for U.S. Open hopefuls. There are 13 sectional sites - 11 in the U.S., one in England, and one in Japan. The international qualifiers took place yesterday, while the U.S. qualifiers are on June 3.

Here are the results from europeantour.com

Simon Khan put his play-off defeat in the BMW PGA Championship behind him to secure one of the 12 spots on offer in the US Open qualifier at Walton Heath.

Khan admitted he had a sleepless night after losing to Italian Matteo Manassero on the fourth extra hole at Wentworth in The European Tour’s flagship event on Sunday.

But he showed few side-effects in the wake of that disappointment as he led the 94 hopefuls competing in the 36 hole qualifying event for next month’s US Open Championship at Merion Golf Club.

The 40 year old followed an opening round of 67 on the Old Course with a 70 on the New Course for a seven under par total of 137, finishing one stroke clear of Englishman Paul Casey and South African Jaco Van Zyl.

PURSE: $6.4 million. Winner’s share: $1,152,000.

CANADIANS IN THE FIELD:  Graeme DeLaet T22 -6 64 67 69 74, David Hearn MC +2 64 78

Round 4 notes
pgatour.com  Boo Weekley finished at 14-under 266 for a one-stroke victory over Matt Kuchar, the second- and third-round leader who had a closing 68. He picked up 500 FedExCup points for the win, and moved to sixth in the standings.

Defending Colonial champion Zach Johnson, who also won at Hogan's Alley in 2010, shot a 66 to finish third at 12 under for his first top-10 finish this season.

Both of Weekley's previous wins had been at Harbour Town, in 2007 and 2008. Like the RBC Heritage winner, the Colonial champion gets a plaid jacket, though the 2008 Ryder Cup team member wasn't able to compare any differences between them.

Graham DeLaet started the day T2 and began his round with a birdie, but 6 bogey's later 74 dropped him 20 places to T22

EUROPEAN TOUR - BMW PGA CHAMPIONSHIP
COURSE: Wentworth Club, West Course (7,302 yards, par 72).
PURSE: $6.1 million. Winner’s share: $1,016,890.

Round 4 notes   (final)
Matteo Manassero became the youngest BMW PGA Championship winner in history at the age of 20 after a thrilling play-off victory at Wentworth Club.

The Italian finished level with 2010 winner Simon Khan and Scotland’s Marc Warren on ten under par after 72 holes, but after Warren exited at the first play-off hole having driven into trees down the right, the two remaining players looked inseparable.

It was the fourth additional trip down the 18th that eventually split Manassero and Khan – the latter finding water with his second while Manassero fired a brilliant approach to 20 feet and two-putted for birdie.

A long-time player on the Japan Golf Tour, Idoki surprised a star-studded field with a two-stroke victory over Jay Haas and Kenny Perry to win the 74th Senior PGA Championship. Perry started the day with a two-stroke advantage over Jay Haas and looked to be in control with birdies on three of his first five holes, but failed to make a birdie until the final hole when the contest had been decided. Idoki started five strokes back, but played a bogey-free round and took the lead for good when he made a 15-foot downhill birdie putt at No. 17.

Kohki Idoki, who resides in Osaka, becomes the first Asian player to win a major championship on the Champions Tour and he earns a full one-year exemption (thru May 26, 2014) on Tour as well as a five-year exemption into the season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai.

Lee’s win ended a wild week on the LPGA where severe weather dumped more than a foot of rain on the tournament course on Tuesday. Recovery efforts by golf course staff from Wednesday through Saturday morning resulted in 45 million gallons of rain water being pumped off the tournament course.

Entering the week, Lee had four career top-10 finishes, including a previous career-best tie for third at the 2013 Kingsmill Championship. She also tied for fourth at the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open.

When Lee joined the LPGA in 2010, she spoke no English. Determined to learn, she stayed each tournament week in private housing with a new family to force herself to speak the language.

Final Wrap

ncaa.com  Southern Cal junior Sophia Popov remembered the pain of a year ago when the Trojans lost a five-stroke lead late in the final round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship, falling to Alabama in the end by a single stroke
.
So she and her teammates took nothing for granted even after they built a big lead in the 2013 championships, keeping their wits about them yesterday as the Trojans rolled to the national championship by 21 shots against the rest of the field.

Their 72-hole total of 1,133 strokes for 19-under-par obliterated the previous NCAA championship record set by UCLA in 2004 by a whopping 15 strokes and left no wiggle room for anyone to come back on them this time.

Final Match (update)

Graeme McDowell has just beat Thongchai Jaidee 2&1 to win the Volvo World Match Play for his second win this month.

The match swung in his favour when Jaidee hooked his drive into deep rough on 14 for his first mistake of the day, and it proved a costly one.

McDowell who is now engaged, heads into next weeks BMW PGA championship in great form and will be considered one of the favourites. All of his Ryder Cup team mates from the Miracle at Medinah will be in the field.

Semi-finals
A stunning display of golf from Graeme McDowell – which featured no less than eight birdies – saw the Northern Irishman march into the Volvo World Match Play Championship final in Bulgaria at the expense of Branden Grace.

McDowell was a beaten finalist in this event in 2012 as Nicolas Colsaerts prevailed, but having seen off the big-hitting Belgian in the quarter-finals on Saturday the 33 year old has a chance to go one better against Thongchai Jaidee on Sunday afternoon.

With conditions absolutely perfect on at the spectacular Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach Resort in Kavarna for the culmination of the 48th World Match Play, McDowell’s day began in purposeful fashion with a tap-in birdie at the first, a start that set the tone for what was a high quality and engaging encounter

Round 3 (Final)
Australian Matthew Griffin won his second OneAsia title in less than a year on Sunday when the final round of the one billion won (U.S. $900,000) SK Telecom Open was called off without a shot being played because of thick fog at Pinx Golf Club on Korea's Jeju Island.

Griffin can credit a spectacular 40 foot putt from off the back of the 18th green on Saturday for the win, as it meant he held a one-shot lead over Korean veteran Kang Wook-soon at the end of three rounds

Volvo World Match Play lacks umph !!

In years gone by the old Piccadilly World Match Play run by Mark McCormack at IMG was the premier match play event in the world, played on the Burma Road Course at Wentworth.

The only other match play was the Ryder Cup and before the European team came into being back in 1979, it was not very good match play as the States and all their big guns overwhelmed the GB & NIre teams.

So when Arnie and Jack and Trevino and Weiskopf etal came over to play alongside Player, Marsh, and Brits like Tony Jacklin and Brian Barnes, Brian Hugget, Peter Oosterhuis, Neil Coles had a shot at beating them over 18 or 36 holes, it was a magical competition.

Since those days the Ryder Cup has become 3 of the greatest days in sports, the Accenture MatchPlay in Arizona has been made a WGC ensuring attendance from the world's top 50, and the old Piccadilly, now called the Volvo has fallen on hard times.

In fact a few years ago it lost it's sponsor and folded until Volvo resurrected it and moved it to Spain to ensure good weather, now this year it is at a spectacular new venue, the Thracian Cliffs Golf and Beach Resort designed by Gary Player in Bulgaria..  (click here to view )http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2013/tournamentid=2013036/news/newsid=191535.html

It has lost it's niche, has a round robin formula that confuses most viewers, that has taken the sudden death excitement out of it, until the latter rounds at least, and the world's best are not in attendance taking away the David vs Goliath match ups that were so appealing.

It simply lacks umph !!

Tiger wins his 4th title of the year !! Final scores all tours..

With his 4th win of the season, Tiger could be the PGA Tour Player of the Year already...I mean who else is close??

PGA TOUR - THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP
COURSE: TPC Sawgrass, Players Stadium Course (7,215 yards, par 72).
PURSE: $9.5 million. Winner’s share: $1.71 million.

Round 4 (Final)
pgatour.com    Tiger Woods had the last word against Sergio Garcia by winning THE PLAYERS Championship
Woods ended a weekend of verbal sparring with Garcia by doing what he does best, closing out tournaments, even if he let this one turn into a tense duel over the final hour at TPC Sawgrass. Tied with Garcia with two holes to play, Woods won by finding land on the last two holes for par to close with a 2-under 70. He finished at 13-under 275 to earn 600 FedExCup points to increase his lead in the season-long standings.

If only it were that simple for the Spaniard.

Garcia was standing on the 17th tee shot, staring across the water to an island as Woods made his par. He took aim at the flag with his wedge and hung his head when he saw the ball splash down short of the green. Then, Garcia hit another one in the water on his way to a quadruple-bogey 7. He completed his stunning collapse by hitting his tee shot into the water on the 18th and making double bogey, finishing with 76 -7.

It is Tiger's 4th win of the year, better than anyone by far..

The Michigan State University graduate headed into Saturday’s final round at Raintree Country Club trailing Alena Sharp by 2-strokes but fought back recording two birdies and one bogey to take home the trophy.

Paired in the final group with Sharp, the LPGA Tour veteran held the driver’s seat throughout Sunday despite recording her first blemish on her scorecard for the week with a double-bogey on the par-4 third hole. Kueny admitted after the round that despite solid ball striking throughout the day, she was plagued by a cold putter throughout her opening nine

All the big boys falter, Derek Ernst (who?) wins at Quail Hollow...all Canadian scores

Despite the rain they managed to get the Wells Fargo done, but with all kinds of big names like Mickelson, Westwood, McIlroy falling by the wayside, another relatively unknown player hit the jackpot. Derek Ernst, ranked 1,207 in the world beat David Lynn in a playoff, put a million bucks in his jeans, and is good to go for 2 years on tour starting with the Players Championship this week..

Here is the wrap up of all tours, including every Canadian score..

PGA TOUR - WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP
COURSE: Quail Hollow Club (7,492 yards, par 72).
PURSE: $6.7 million. Winner’s share: $1,206,000.

CANADIAN CONNECTION: Stephen Ames MC, Brad Fritsch T68 +7 71 72 77 75, David Hearn T43 +2 69 72 75 74, Mike Weir MDF 72 73 76

Round 4
pgatour.com. Six days after Derek Ernst received a call that he was in the Wells Fargo Championship as the fourth alternate, the 22-year-old rookie found himself one shot out of the lead and 192 yards away from the flag on the 18th hole, the toughest at Quail Hollow in the cold, wind and rain of a grueling final round.

Ernst choked up on a 6-iron and hit a draw that landed 4 feet from the hole for one of only four birdies on the closing hole Sunday.

The birdie gave him a 2-under 70 and tied him with David Lynn of England, who also had a 70. And it turned out to be no fluke. Returning to the 18th in the playoff, as the rain started coming out harder, Ernst hit a 3-iron to about 15 feet left of the flag that set up his stunning victory.

Phil Mickelson didn't get a chance to join them. He had a one-shot lead with three holes to play until making back-to-back bogeys, missing putts of 6 feet and 10 feet. His 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th narrowly missed, and Mickelson closed with a 73

So ended a strange week at Quail Hollow. The greens were shockingly bad due to weather and agronomical issues, which led to several players dropping out. The sun never really came out all week, and the wind chill Sunday morning made it hard to believe it was the first weekend in May. It felt like February at Pebble Beach

Ernst was playing only his ninth PGA TOUR event. He was No. 1,207 in the world ranking. He was in a car headed to Athens, Ga., to play a Web.com Tour event when he got the phone call that there was a tee time for him at Quail Hollow.

Robert Karlsson, the Swede who now lives in Charlotte, needed a birdie on the last hole to get into the playoff but made bogey for a 72. That left him in a tie for fourth with Westwood, who was tied for the lead until back-to-back bogeys early on the back nine.

McIlroy was one shot behind when he made a double bogey on the 12th hole. He played that hole in 4 over for the week. He had a 73 and tied for 10th

Round 4
lpga.com  It was another fight to the finish in Williamsburg, Va. at the Kingsmill Championship, as Cristie Kerr outlasted Suzann Pettersen in a two-hole sudden death playoff for her 16th career victory.

Kerr sank a two-foot par putt on the 18th hole to clinch the win and break into the winner’s circle for the third time at Kingsmill. Kerr, who shot a 2-under 69 in the final round, said she grinded out in regulation and felt lucky to even be in contention

The 50-year-old Toledo, making his ninth start on the 50-and-over tour, eagled the opening hole and finished with a 5-under 67 to match Goodes and Gene Sauers at 6-under 210 at The Woodlands Country Club

EUROPEAN TOUR/ONEASIA TOUR - CHINA OPEN
COURSE: Binhai Lake Golf Club (7,667 yards, par 72).
PURSE: $3.24 million. Winner’s share: $534,915.

Round 4 (Final)
Brett Rumford delivered a short-game masterclass as the Australian became only the 31st player to win consecutive titles on The European Tour at the Volvo China Open.

After a nail-biting play-off victory at the Ballantine’s Championship last Sunday, matters were much more straightforward at Binhai Lake for the 35 year old, who surged clear with five birdies in ten holes to turn the final round into a procession.
A couple of dropped shots over the closing holes were no more than a footnote as Rumford signed for a four under par 68 and 16 under total – four clear of Finland’s Mikko Ilonen.

The fourth and fifth European Tour titles of Rumford’s career signal a remarkable upturn in form – he was 138th on The Race to Dubai a fortnight ago but now leads the way on €811,806, having won €775,406 in his past two tournaments

Round 4 (Final)
Bernd Wiesberger of Austria sealed a dramatic win at the CIMB Niaga Indonesian Masters with a five-under-par 67 to defeat a persistent Ernie Els by one-shot earlier today
.
Wiesberger won his second title in Asia courtesy of some exquisite ball striking as he totalled 15-under-par 273 at the US$750,000 Asian Tour event which was staged at the majestic Royale Jakarta Golf Club.

Els, the reigning Open Championship winner, settled for second place after carding 68 while overnight leader Daisuke Kataoka of Japan claimed third place with a round of 70 to finish on 275. Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand was a further three shots back in fourth after registering 69.
