'Throughout the 600-year history of golf, the essence of playing the game has been to grip the club with the hands and swing it freely at the ball,' USGA Executive Director Mike Davis said. 'The player’s challenge is to control the movement of the entire club in striking the ball, and anchoring the club alters the nature of that challenge
So with that the R&A and the USGA gave decided to ban the anchoring that is inherent in using the long or belly putter. This I agree with although there are several things about the announcement that has the golf world buzzing that raises my ire.
* First of all it was the same governing bodies that allowed players to anchor back in 1989 that has led to yesterday's ruling.. Talk about hoisting yourself by your own petard..
* Next, the ban doesn't take place until 2016. I realize these suits change rules in 4 year cycles, but come on, if it is so bad, it starts on January 1, 2013..
* On the PGA tour this year 39 winners had regulation putters, 6 anchored. This ruling will lessen the enjoyment of golfing for millions of recreation golfers who might even be using them for health reasons (bad backs etc) for the sake of a very few pros.
I have always argued that anchoring simply is wrong. It is against the fundamental principle that to putt well, you have to be able to control your nerves, and for those who can't it shows up in their hands. Anchoring removes that problem, especially when you combine it with the claw grip, thus completely removing the hands.
As for we duffers, we break the rules of golf every time we play, foot wedges, 6 foot gimme's, tip ups, mulligans, you know them all don't you. So while I agree we all should be bound by one set of rules I am sure we will continue to see those ugly big sticks in golf bags long beyond 2016..
It may be "Anchors Away" for the pros and top amateurs, but along with the foot wedge and all the rest, I feel we weekend warriors will be humming the same old song..

Fritsch finishes T7, Hadwin 32nd at Q School..Live scoring links including all Canucks
This is the last year for Q school as we know it. There are 172 entrants for the men and only the top 25 will get their cards. It's a total stroke play event over 6 gruelling rounds at PGA West in California
Next year the players who finish 126-200 on the PGA Tour and the top 75 from the Web.com Tour will play 3 tournaments and the top 50 will get their cards. There will be a Q school but only for the Web.Com Tour.
I feel that's a shame because as many of you will know, Q school is full of thrills and spills and there aren't any tournaments all year with more tension.

Graeme McDowell (68 -17) won for the fiirst time in 2 years as he beat his playing partner Keegan Bradley by 3 shots to win the PGA World Challenge. His last win was the same event when he beat Tiger in a playoff
Speaking of Tiger he put up $4m of his own cash to keep the exhibition event afloat after Chevron withdrew.
Meanwhile in South Africa Martin Kaymer shot -3 69 to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge by 2 shots at -8 280. Kaymer has struggled trying to regain his trademark fade after changing his game to a draw to try and play more effectively at the Masters.

Rory is the Story in Dubai.. live scoring links to all tours
Rory McIlroy has already won it, but the Race To Dubai officially wraps up at the Earth Course in Dubai this weekend. Expect to see Tour officials tweak the format this year so the outcome has a better chance of hinging on this final week..
You may remember Luke Donald had to travel to Florida for the season ending event last year to ensure he edged out Webb Simpson or the PGA Tour money title and in fact he finished 3rd in Dubai to wrap up the European Tour money title.
The Japan and Australasian Tours are in full swing as is the Sunshine Tour in RSA and as always I will provide live scoring links and reports here for them all..

Defending champ Alviro Quiros..
Round 4 wrap
europeantour.com Rory McIlroy capped his remarkable 2012 season with victory at the DP World Tour Championship on a dramatic final day at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
The World Number One held off not only World Number Two and playing partner Luke Donald, but also Justin Rose - whose Earth Course record 62 had threatened to spoil the Northern Irishman’s lap of honour after a year in which he has won The Race to Dubai, the US PGA Championship and the money list in America.
McIlroy had found himself two behind as Ryder Cup teammate Rose put the finishing touches to a dazzling ten under par display, the lowest round of his European Tour career by two.
But the 23 year old, tied for the lead with second-ranked Donald overnight, was not to be denied and finished with five closing birdies.
He chipped close on the long 14th, pitched to three feet at the next, made a 20 footer on the 16th and went one ahead with a six foot putt on the short 17th.
Rose had done miraculously well to two-putt the par five last for birdie from around 100 feet, but McIlroy matched it to win by two; shooting 66 for 23 under.
By adding the title to his Race to Dubai crown McIlroy earned himself a combined €1,822,520 to set a new record for a single-season earnings with €5,519,117.
It was his fifth victory during a 2012 which included a second Major title - like the first by eight shots - and the same money list double on both sides of the Atlantic achieved by Donald last year. This season he has finished in the top ten in ten of his 15 tournaments on The European Tour
After finding the water on the last Donald shared third place with South African Charl Schwartzel

But his final round five under par 67 was good enough for a one shot win from Australian professionals Jason Norris and Peter Wilson who took home in the $A56,400 each from the event

Rory wins PGA of America and US Vardon Trophy awards
Rory McIlroy has just won the PGA of America and US Vardon trophies.
The world number one won four times in the US during a season in which he topped the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic.
McIlroy's victories included his second major win at the US PGA in August.
The Northern Irishman will also be favourite to land the PGA Tour's own player of the year award.
Tiger Woods was runner-up for the PGA of America's Player of the Year but ineligible for the Vardon Trophy because of his injury withdrawal during the final round of the WGC Championship in Miami in March.
But for that he would have finished with an average of 68.9 to McIlroy's 68.87 but second place instead went to Jim Furyk on 69.3.
The PGA Tour has its own Player of the Year award, and members have until 30 November to vote.
Rory is defending his title in Hong Kong this week having just wrapped up the Race to Dubai after his 3rd place finish in Singapore.

Matteo Manessero wins a playoff Singapore, Beljan wins at Disney..with live scoring links and all Canadian scores
The last official event of the year is the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic at the Disney Resort in Florida and of course it is life or death for all the guys who have not secured their cards and are around the 125 mark. Billy Mayfair is on that number right now.
Remember last year Luke Donald had to play this event as he and Webb Simpson were close for the money title. He shot 64 won the tourney and went on to win the money titles on both tours in his year of years.
Rory McIlroy is about to emulate him, he has already wrapped up the PGA tour and has a healthy lead as he plays in Singapore this week, on the European Tour.

pgatour.com Two days after he was wheeled out of the scoring room on a stretcher, Charlie Beljan was celebrating on the 18th green as the band played "Zippity-Do-Dah." He arrived at the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic with his job in jeopardy, and left with a two-year exemption that will send him to the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at the start of the year, the PGA Championship at Oak Hill and lots of other tournaments where winners belong.
"Every day I drove underneath that Disney sign coming in here that said, 'Where dreams come true,' and that's just what happened this week," Beljan said after closing with a 3-under 69 for a two-shot win.
Robert Garrigus and Matt Every each closed with 68s and tied for second.
Tim Herron was the other big winner Sunday, closing with a 69 to tie for ninth. That gave him enough money to move from No. 138 to No. 124 on the money list, giving him his full card for the 2013 season.
Kevin Chappell finished at No. 125. He wound up $1,809 ahead of Jerry Kelly, who is out of the top 125 for the first time in his career

europeantour.com....Rory McIlroy had a 69 65 weekend to finish 3rd at -10. Louis Oosthuizen and Matteo Manessero went to a playoff to decide the winner..
With both in the fairway in the third playff hole, each player found the green, with Oosthuizen using the slope long of the green to help his ball back onto the left of the putting surface while Manassero did the same, but half the distance to the hole, with an excellent chance of eagle. And the Italian took advantage, rolling his putt for a three right in the heart from 12 feet after Oosthuizen had missed from long range, and Manassero picks up the third win of his career on The European Tour at just 19 years of age
