Bhatia the rabbit...Conners leads Canucks at Valero Texas Open...Full Saturday leaderboard

PGA Tour : Valero Texas Open Leaderboard Tee Times

Akshay Bhatia's father Sonny let him quit school rather than go to college, because his son hadn't liked it since grade 8.

PLAYER BIO

  • Birthday: 1/31/2002
  • Year Turned Pro: 2019
  • Height: 6'0"

The tall skinny lefthander who lives in Wake Forest, NC tells us what most would consider some immature BS about not liking school, but following in his older sister Rhea's footsteps he concentrated on being outside playing golf and became good enough as a teenager to work his way through junior ranks winning the boys junior PGA Championship at 15, then made his debut on the PGA Tour as an amateur here at the Valspar Championship as a 17 year old in 2019.

Now 22 he is the rabbit, leading the same event by 5 shots after 36 holes in very windy San Antonio, Texas.

By rabbit I refer to the age old track and field ploy of racing away from the field in the classic mile or 1500 meters at a pace well above average hoping you can lead by enough when your lungs give out as the pack catches up.

That is what a 63 70 -11 score will do, in blustery winds at TPC San Antonio with Brendon Todd 66 72 -6, Denny McCarthy 68 70 -6 and Russell Henley 69 69 -6 leading the pack who will close in on him this weekend.

Rory has just 1 bogey, 69 70 -5 as he prepares for Augusta next week.

Canadians

Corey Conners T10 70 71 -3

Ben Silverman T34 71 72 -1

Adam Svensson T47 69 75 E

Taylor Pendrith 71 78 and Roger Sloan 74 73 both MC which fell at +1.
