Nice to see Weirsy on TV, and playing well.

I have seen more of Mike Weir on TV yesterday and today than I have since his salad days in 2003, 04 and 05, and it took a trip to the Open de Andalucia Costa del Sol on the European tour to make it happen.

He has just completed round 2, 68,73 -3 T31, 5 shots off the lead currently at -8, but the tournament host, Miguel Jimenez is at -7 playing #13.

So far this is his best outing of the year, having missed the cut at Pebble, Mayakoba and the Honda, his lowest score in those events was 70. While he is ranked #1 on tour in GIR from 125yds and in, a look at his basic stats shows us the problem he is having off the tee.

He still has the same half swing takeaway before he hits anything but his putts, and his wedge game and putting stance and stroke on display this week look just like the Weirsy of old. Today he was out in -1 playing the back nine first, but wayward drives cost him bogey 5's at 6 and 7, so +1 73 and he will be around to compete for the title this weekend, all a step in the right direction.

His driver must be driving even the most positive of guys nutsy. I remember standing on a balcony overlooking the driving range on a windy Sunday at our Canadian Open at the Abbey, watching him a few years ago before his problems, dressed in his Sunday black, all alone with Brennan, just striping drivers and 3 woods into the wind effortlessly.

Who was it that said, the toughest test of golf anywhere in the world is the one between your ears.. Did you know with his 2 wins on the European Tour, Weirsy has won 6,532,188 Euros over there since 1997. That my friends is $8,503,160 Canadian...
