Finland's Sami Valimaki wins a playoff in Qatar..... Cockerill's season ends...final results

DP World Tour : Commercial Bank Qatar Masters

Sami Välimäki overcame Jorge Campillo in a play-off to win the 2023 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters after hunting down the Spaniard during a thrilling back-nine battle.

Sami Välimäki secures play-off glory in Qatar

Trailing third-round leader Campillo all afternoon, Finland's Välimäki finally hit the front at the 17th courtesy of a seven-foot birdie putt.

But the pendulum swung back Campillo's way as the Spaniard birdied the last to join Välimäki on 18 under par and take the contest to extra holes.

And Välimäki only needed one play-off hole to seal victory, as a nerveless birdie putt earned him a second DP World Tour title, and 603,208 euros ($884,000 cdn)

Scott Jamieson wrapped up his card for next season with another stunning back-nine display at Doha Golf Club, signing for a closing 69 to finish in a tie for third alongside Nacho Elvira.

Välimäki went into the final round one shot behind leader Campillo but found himself two back straight away after his playing partner birdied the first for the fourth round in succession to get to 17 under.

And the 25-year-old appeared in danger of being cut adrift after dropping a shot at the sixth.

But he responded with back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth, holing from around 15 feet on both occasions.

He cut the gap at the top to one shot with an 11-foot birdie at the 12th, before pulling alongside 2020 champion Campillo with a 20-foot putt on the 13th, with the Spaniard narrowly missing his birdie attempt from 13 feet moments later.

Campillo came agonisingly close to getting a birdie on the next hole but his 16-foot effort clung to the left edge of the cup without dropping.

But no damage was done as Välimäki failed to take advantage from a little closer in.

Errant tee-shots from both of the leaders at the 15th threw the battle wide open, with Välimäki among the pebbles and Campillo in the thick rough.

While Välimäki opted to knock his ball back onto the fairway, Campillo went for the green and managed to two-putt from 40 feet for par, while the Finn surrendered a bogey after missing his 20-foot par try.

But it was Campillo's turn to find the rocks with his tee-shot at the 16th, and he made his first bogey of the day to sit alongside Välimäki on 17 under.

Both players found the green at the short 17th, but after Campillo's 13-foot putt pulled up just shy, Välimäki holed from seven feet to take the lead for the first time all afternoon.

The momentum swung back Campillo's way on the 18th as he found the green in two, while Välimäki had to lay up. With Välimäki only managing a par to sign for a closing 69, Campillo tapped in his birdie putt from close range to post a 70 and take the contest to a play-off.

But Välimäki came out on top at the first extra hole, knocking in his birdie putt from around six feet after Campillo had missed his attempt.

An emotional Valimaki was thrilled with his victory, saying: "Unbelievable. It's hard to talk. It's been a long journey and it feels great.

"I've worked so hard and I feel like I've earned it a couple of times but it hasn't come my way. What's why it feels so amazing."

When asked what it meant to have his fiancée present for his victory, he added: "She is my number one."

edit>>> Canada's Aaron Cockerill completed his week in Qatar T47 70 70 71 72 -5 worth 15,612euros ($22,879). With that he moves up 4 spots to #76 in the Race to Dubai thus ending his 2023 season having secured full playing rights for 2024.

Spaniard Jorge Campillo leads Commercial Bank Qatar Masters after 54 holes... full leaderboard

DP World Tour : Commercial Bank Qatar Masters

The 54 hole leader is former champion Jorge Campillo who found himself one shot clear at the top of the 2023 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters leaderboard with one hole of his third round to complete when play was halted due to fading light on Saturday evening.

Former champion Jorge Campillo the man to catch in Qatar

The 2020 winner had to return to the course early on day three to finish off his second round, carding four birdies in eight holes to sign for a 65.

And the Spaniard continued his fine form in round three, making six birdies and no bogeys in his first 17 holes to get to 16 under par before the hooter sounded at 16.47 local time.

Finn Sami Välimäki was his nearest challenger on 15 under after finishing his third-round 67 with a birdie at the 18th in near-darkness.

Scottish Ryder Cup star Robert MacIntyre was a single shot further back with two holes of his round still to go.

His countryman Scott Jamieson was among those another stroke back after firing eight birdies in his final ten holes on Saturday to give his chances of keeping his DP World Tour card an enormous boost.

Jamieson started the week 119th on the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex, needing a good result to squeeze into the top 116.

Välimäki turned in 33 courtesy of three front-nine birdies before dropping his first shot of the week at the 11th.

But he bounced straight back, making gains at the 12th, 13th and 18th to get to 15 under.

Välimäki said: "I actually got a really good read (on the 18th). I saw the line and made a really good putt.

"I’ll try to win the tournament, it has been a long time, so hopefully I’ll get back in the circle. I have tomorrow to go and then two more weeks. I need to get one win to make it to the PGA TOUR. That’s my goal."

edit **** With 2 birdies, an eagle and 3 bogey's Aaron Cockerill posted a 3rd round -1 71 to finish at -5. He will be out early Sunday morning.

Kiwi Hillier holds 36 hole lead.. Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.. live scoreboard

DP World Tor : Commercial Bank Qatar Masters..

They are still playing catch up in Qatar at the Commercial Bank Masters after Thursday's Sand Storm, thunder and lightning, and with round two completed and the cut made at -3.

Hillier-1757337778
Daniel Hillier is coming into the week off back-to-back top-20 finishes

With round 3 is currently under way Kiwi Daniel Hillier with scores of 65,65 held the lead after making four birdies in his final seven holes for 65, -14 on the resumption of the delayed second round to hold a two-shot advantage at the halfway stage.

Ryder Cup star Robert MacIntyre is his nearest challenger after the Scot made three birdies over the nine holes he had left to complete at Doha Golf Club to card a bogey-free 66 matching his opening round.

Defending champion Ewen Ferguson is at 11 under, with Spaniard Tarrio, who spoke openly after the first round about the inner challenges he has faced with his game, also at that mark.

Ross Fisher, who came into the week 115th on the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex, boosted his hopes of retaining his playing privileges as he made the cut mark on the number at three under.

Among those to narrowly miss the cut who were outside the top 116 on the season-long points standings and in need of a strong week were Marc Warren, Alfredo Garcia-Heredia and Alexander Levy.

Hillier is enjoying a fine run of late-season form and made the perfect start on Saturday morning as he rolled in a nine-foot birdie putt to take the solo lead, before another gain quickly followed at the par three 13th.

Already a winner on the DP World Tour this season at the Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo, the 2022 Challenge Tour graduate then picked up another shot at the 16th before ending his round with a flourish by holing from 20 feet on the 18th green.

“It was a great way to start the day,” he said of his birdie immediately on the resumption at the 12th. “It’s going to be a bit of a marathon out there, but I’m really happy to come out with some perfect conditions and make the most of it.

“I’ve been playing really well, haven’t done a whole lot wrong. Haven’t made a bogey yet. I think it’s one of the only times I’ve gone bogey-free through 36 holes.

"So that’s pretty cool. I’ve got a game plan that I’m sticking to and it’s working, so I’ll do that over the next couple of days.”

edit *** Canadian Aaron Cockerill rallied early in the day with a no bogey, 2 birdie performance to ease into the weekend at -4, currently playing round 3 off the 10th tee where he has been all pars until a bogey 5 at 15, then chipped in for an eagle 2 at the short par 4 16, and birdied the 17th, out in -2, 34 T26, 6 shots off the current lead -12.

DP World Tour: Play suspended at Commercial Bank Qatar Masters... Friday leaderboard

DP World Tour : Commercial Bank Qatar Masters Leaderboard

Thomas Aiken gave his chances of keeping his DP World Tour card a huge boost after making 13 birdies and two bogeys in 31 holes on Friday to grab a share of the lead at the 2023 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.

Three-time DP World Tour winner Aiken came into the week 161st on the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex, knowing a huge week was needed to retain his playing privileges.

Thomas Aiken shares lead after marathon day in Qatar

And the 40-year-old rose to the challenge on Friday, giving himself a brilliant opportunity to secure the strong finish he requires over the weekend after following up a 69 with a 65 at Doha Golf Club.

Starting the day on one over par after only completing five holes of his first round on Thursday, the South African carded five birdies and one bogey in the morning to sign for an opening 69.

He then returned to the course to begin round two, adding eight birdies and one bogey in a stunning 65 to reach ten under par.

Joining him on that mark overnight were Daniel Hillier and Santiago Tarrio, who must return to complete their second rounds on Saturday morning

New Zealand's Hillier made three birdies in the first 11 holes of his round before play was suspended due to fading light at 16.58 local time, and will have a birdie putt - and the chance to take the outright lead - when he resumes at the 12th early on Saturday.

Spaniard Tarrio, who made four birdies and no bogeys before having to leave the course, has six holes left to play.

Scots Robert MacIntyre and Ewen Ferguson - the defending champion - were a shot further back after nine holes of their second rounds, alongside Edoardo Molinari, who has seven holes remaining.

Aiken said: "I played really solid today. We had 31 holes to play, so it was a long day. Early wake-up call.

"It’s a course that I like, I’ve always played well here in the past. Unfortunately with the rain yesterday it got a little wet, normally it plays firm and fast, which is what I like.

"Hopefully it dries up over the weekend and starts playing more like that. But I played really solid. It’s tough competing against these youngsters these days - they hit it so far.

"It’s getting a little tougher to play in your forties, but I still feel like I can win out here. I just need the right golf course.

edit*** Canada's Aaron Cockerill managed to beat the weather on Thursday but after a long sleep in, only got in 9 holes on Friday with a birdie and a bogey on the front 9 and now he sits at -2 right on the cut line with an early start at 7am local on Saturday, with yet another nervy 9 to ensure sure he makes the weekend

Sand storm, lightning suspends play Qatar Commercial Bank Masters... live scoreboard

DP World Tour : Qatar Commercial Bank Masters Leaderboard  Tee Times

The Scottish flag is all over the leaderboard in Qatar, with 4 players in the top 3. Scott Jamieson -7 65 shares clubhouse lead with Kiwi Daniel Hillier, defending champion Ewen Ferguson, Stephen Gallagher and Robert MacIntyre all T3 -6 66.

Jamieson began play ranked #119 in the Race to Dubai, so is one of many who need a big week to crack the top 116.

They all were out early before the vaunted desert wind whipped up, driven by a weather cell with thunder and lightning suspended play with the late wave still on course.

Round 1will continue at 630am local time on Friday.

Aaron Cockerill

Canada's Aaron Cockerill has had a solid start T24 -2 70. He began on #10, out in E 36 with 2 bogey's and 2 birdies. He made par 5's on the first and 9th, but reeled off 3 birdies with a lone bogey on the 4th when he drew a bad lie in the rough with his tee shot and had to lay up from 115 yards.

As I mentioned yesterday he begins this last event of the regular season 80th on the money list with the top 116 getting their 2024 DP World Tour cards, so his playing privileges' are secure unlike last year when the Cockerill family friends and sponsors were on tender hooks as he final got in at #106.

DP World Tour cards at stake this week at Qatar Commercial Bank Masters...full rankings

DP World Tour:  Qatar Commercial Bank Qatar Masters Rankings

Tee Times

The agony and ecstasy of sport is set to be on display this week with plenty at stake for many of those in action at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.

Doha golf club

The tournament’s 26th edition is the last ‘regular’ event of the 2023 DP World Tour season, offering players the final opportunity to secure their playing privileges for the 2024 campaign via their Race to Dubai Ranking.

Following this week’s event in the Middle East, there is a one-week break on the schedule before the Nedbank Golf Challenge which features a 66-player field.

While the chance to tee it up at Sun City will be a source of motivation for many in action, there is also the allure of being among the top 50 available players on the Race to Dubai rankings that feature in the lucrative DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

Even further up the season-long standings, there is also the question of who will earn PGA TOUR cards by finishing as the leading ten players not otherwise exempt.

After last week’s final event of the campaign on European soil, the Tour returns to the Middle East with the top 116 players at the end of this week earning exemptions into the 2024 schedule.

Those who don’t get inside the top 116 most likely face a return to the Qualifying School or a season on the European Challenge Tour.

As part of the strategic alliance between the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR announced in 2022, a pathway was opened for players to secure status on the PGA TOUR through their performances on the Race to Dubai.

Ten PGA TOUR cards are available to the highest-ranked players in the season-long standings who don’t already hold PGA TOUR status for finishing in the top 125 of the FedEx Cup Playoffs and Eligibility Points List or above.

The top finisher in the Race to Dubai who is not already exempt on the PGA TOUR will be fully exempt for the following TOUR season.

edit>>>

Aaron Cockerill

Last year at this event it was life or death for Canada's Aaron Cockerill and he secured his card with a 106 place finish. It was a vital moment in his career.

This year being fully exempt he has played in 23 events and begins play on Wednesday ranked #80, so his playing rights are secure for 2024, and a great week could propel him into the top 60.

You will remember he and wife Chelsea welcomed their first child, Madison into this world in February, and as all parents know, he has been juggling his priorities and emotions being away from them for prolonged periods.

Polish star Meronk wins in Spain's Andalucia Masters... final results

DP World Tour : Estrella Damm N.A Andalucia Masters Results

A pair of eagles helped Adrian Meronk to a tournament-winning 66 at the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters.

Adrian Meronk eagles his way to victory in Andalucía

The Pole, who narrowly missed out on a place in Europe’s triumphant Ryder Cup squad, finished 16 under par to win by one stroke from Germany's Matti Schmid at Real Club de Golf Sotogrande in San Roque.

Richard Mansell was a shot further back in third after a tense final round played in changeable weather conditions and brought forward to earlier in the day due to the threat of storms.

Asked for his feelings afterwards, Meronk said: “Relieved, to be honest.

It was a tough tournament, tough weather, didn’t have my best golf on the first day so to win the tournament is very special. I’m over the moon.

Meronk was two over for the first three holes but responded in style with an eagle at the sixth and holed out from 120 yards for another at the ninth to go out in 34.

A 42-foot birdie putt at the tenth took him within one of the lead held by Schmid and another long eagle attempt at the 12th went close to set up a tap-in birdie.

The German dropped a shot at the 13th but responded by matching Meronk’s birdie at the next to keep his nose in front.

The Pole’s nerveless birdie at the 17th put the pressure on Schmid, who missed his par putt back on 16 as the lead swung to Meronk.

Schmid parred the par-three 17th and was left needing a birdie at the last, where Meronk made par to finish 16 under.

The German was just unable to hole a 40-foot birdie putt on the last, which would have forced a play-off, leaving Meronk to celebrate.

Chase Hanna finished 13 under, in the process securing his DP World Tour card for next season. The American shared fourth place with Louis de Jager.

Jeff Winther was 12 under with Marcel Siem and Jeong weon Ko a shot further back, the latter putting himself in position for a 2024 card in the process. Defending champion Adrian Otaegui, playing in the final group with Schmid and Winther, finished tied for ninth on 10 under.

Andalucia Masters.. Three way tie for the lead....Cockerill M/C..

DP World Tour : Andaulcia Masters

Defending champion Adrian Otaegui held a share of the lead at the halfway stage of the 2023 Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters after finishing his second-round 69 with a flourish to remain bogey-free for the week.

Starting the day two shots off the lead after kicking off the week with a flawless 66, home favourite Otaegui opened his second round with a tap-in birdie but had to wait patiently for his next one after making 14 straight pars. More to follow....

Meanwhile Thomas Bjørn had thought Friday's second round represented the end of an era as he made his way down the back nine before late fireworks saw him through to the weekend at the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters.

Having played a full schedule throughout his long and storied DP World Tour career, the 52-year-old's current exemption ends this season and this is set to be his last event on the exemption.

Thomas Bjørn allows himself 'big smile' after late fireworks delay end of an era

"I enjoy being out here, I enjoy being with these young guys but everything comes to an end. As much as I will still play a few events here and there, I certainly won’t play a full schedule going forward. They are simply too good.

Otaegui the  DP World Tour winner missed a series of birdie opportunities during that run but he made no mistake from 20 feet on the 16th green before making it two in a row at the 17th to join early clubhouse leaders Louis de Jager and Jeong weon Ko on nine under par.

He had an outside chance to complete his birdie hat-trick and take the outright lead on the 18th but instead settled for a two-putt par and a clean card.

Frenchman Ko had to return to the course on Friday morning to complete his first round, birdieing the last to sign for a spotless 67 before coming back soon after to card a second-round 68 which contained five birdies and one bogey.

Ko's fellow morning starter De Jager had set the early target after making six birdies and a solitary bogey in his 67.

The trio were one shot ahead of New Zealand's Daniel Hillier, who followed up his first-round 70 with a 66.

Otaegui, who secured a spectacular six-shot victory at nearby Real Club Valderrama 12 months ago to win this title, was pleased with his day's work.

He said: "I'm happy with my day, I'm happy with the way I played.

"I really enjoyed it, I really felt very confident from tee to green.

"I gave myself lots of birdie chances but not from very close. I hit some good putts - didn't hole many, but I'm happy that I holed a couple on the 16th and 17th. Very happy overall."

LPGA Tour: BMW Ladies Championship PAIRINGS

After 2 rounds Brooke Henderson has hit 25/28 fairways and made 33/36 greens in regulation and with scores of 68 71 -5 she begins the weekend T12 and 6 shots off the lead at Seowon Hills Valley CC.

The telling stat, 31 putts on Thursday and 33 on Friday compared to leader Minjee Lee 26 and 31 leading to 64 69 -11.

64 putts for Brooke, 57 for Minjee don't tell all of the story, but that 7 stroke advantage means the difference for Brooke being T12 and leading, she is striking the ball so well.

Looking at the putting for the rest of the field, Brooke's numbers on the green are similar to the rest, not terrible at all, but her ball striking has her in in the top 5, well above the rest.

The conclusion is just a reminder of Brooke's MO, when she putts well her record shows her with an amazing number of top 10's...when she putts really well she wins a Canadian record 13 wins.

Andalucia Masters : Morrison leads, Cockerill plays in strong wind.. full leaderboard

DP World Tour : Andalucia Masters Leaderboard

James Morrison produced a brilliant burst of scoring around the turn as he fired a superb 64 in tricky conditions to lead by one shot after the first day of the 2023 Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters.

Spain has been a happy hunting ground for the Englishman, who claimed his second DP World Tour title at the Open de España in 2015, and he shone again in Andalucia on Thursday to reach eight under par.

Morrison enjoyed a remarkable hot streak in the middle of his round, making one eagle and five birdies in seven holes either side of the turn.

Strong winds made life difficult for the players in the afternoon, with Morrison dropping his only shot on the 15th.

But he made a spectacular bounce-back birdie on the 16th before producing a fine par save at the last as the wind buffeted him.

Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters - Day one digest

Fellow morning starter Nick Bachem was Morrison's nearest challenger on seven under after he carded an eagle, seven birdies and two bogeys in his 65.

Defending champion Adrian Otaegui, who won at nearby Real Club Valderrama 12 months ago, was a shot further back following his bogey-free 66.

Daniel Gavins and Wil Besseling were in a tie for fourth on five under, with afternoon starter Jeong weon Ko among those on four under after 15 holes of his round when play was suspended due to fading light.

Morrison closed his round with back-to-back pars to set the clubhouse target at eight under, and with conditions failing to improve, no-one was able to catch him at the top.

"I’m very happy," said Morrison. "I knew the draw was going to be that way and we got more holes in this morning with no wind than we actually thought we were going to get in, so we had to make hay while the sun was shining and I did that.

edit*** Canada's Aaron Cockerill went out late in the worst of the weather in the strong winds, and managed to post 5 birdies, with 4 bogey's for -1 71 T41.  He has a short turn around with an early start Friday morning, hoping to get the same calm conditions the leaders got today.

2nd edit ***** just happened, Aaron Cockerill 71 75 +2 likely will M/C projected at -1..
