The Smallrus edges out DeLaet in Phoenix

European Tour
Omega Dubai Desert Classic
Emirates Golf Club

Round 4 final

Stephen Gallacher produced another tremendous back-nine fightback to become the first player to successfully defend the Omega Dubai Desert Classic,by one shot from Argentina's Emiliano Grillo.

Gallacher began the day with a two shot lead over playing partner Rory McIlroy, but bogeyed the first two holes and dropped further shots on the sixth and eighth to fall two off the pace.

However, the 39 year old Scot found the back nine at Emirates Golf Club very much to his liking for the second day in succession, making birdies on the 11th, 13th, 16th and 17th to finish 16 under par after a closing 72.

Rory McIlroy never reproduced the form which saw him shoot an opening 63, eventually carding a closing 74 to finish four behind Gallacher.

Round 4  final

The Smallrus finally hoisted a big PGA TOUR trophy. Kevin Stadler, the 33-year-old son of major champion Craig "The Walrus" Stadler, won the Phoenix Open for his first PGA TOUR victory.

Stadler won when playing partner Bubba Watson missed a 5-foot par putt on 18. Stadler closed with a 3-under 68 for a one-stroke victory over Watson and Canadian Graham DeLaet. Watson shot 71, and DeLaet had a 65 65 weekend

DeLaet bogeyed the 15th after hitting into the water, but rallied with birdies on the final two holes. He also tied for second last week at Torrey Pines. "I have been playing well for the last few months," DeLaet said. "I really feel like I worked super hard in the offseason. It's nice to see it paying off."

David Hearn  +2 73 leaving him at E for the tournament.

Round 4 final

Scott Stallings was in a five-way tie for the lead when he hit his second shot on the par-5 18th hole as hard as he could. It was enough to barely clear the water, and he took two putts from 40 feet for birdie and a 4-under 68 at Torrey Pines. That was enough for a one-shot victory when no one could catch him.

So many others squandered a good chance to win, at one point 20 players were within 3 shots of the lead.
Jason Day (68) and Graham DeLaet (68) each made birdie on the last hole to tie for second. So did Pat Perez, the San Diego native who grew up at Torrey Pines and whose father is the longtime starter on the first tee at the Farmers Insurance Open. Perez missed a 10-foot birdie chance on the 17th. He closed with a 70.

European Tour
Commercial Bank Qatar Masters
Doha Golf Club

Round 4  final

For the second year running Sergio Garcia produced a stunning late charge at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, but this time it led to victory as the Spaniard finally got his hands on the trophy.

Garcia defeated Finland's Mikko Ilonen on the third hole of a sudden-death play-off to make up for missing out 12 months ago, when England's Chris Wood made an eagle on the 72nd hole to beat Garcia and George Coetzee by a shot.

A flawless closing 65 saw Garcia set the clubhouse target of 16 under par, but the 34 year old crucially missed from eight feet for a birdie on the last and then looked on as Ilonen birdied the 16th and 18th to complete a 66 and force extra holes.

The players returned to the 18th for the play-off and both found the green on the par five in two, Ilonen missing his eagle attempt from 30 feet before Garcia did likewise from half the distance.

A second visit to the 18th failed to identify a winner, Ilonen missing an eagle attempt from 20 feet after Garcia had got up and down from a greenside bunker.

However, the third extra hole proved decisive as Ilonen found the same bunker and was unable to rescue a birdie, leaving Garcia a tap-in to secure an 11th European Tour title after his long eagle putt had narrowly missed.

Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship

Round 4 final

Pablo Larrazábal held his nerve on the final green to deny a chasing pack including Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

The Spaniard knocked in a five foot birdie putt at the last after leaving his eagle effort well short for a closing five under par 67 and 14 under total

Mickelson looked to be in command with three birdies over his first ten holes. But the Open Champion hit a three wood left under a bush on the 13th and decided to try and play back-handed rather than taking a drop.

The ball only bobbled up and caught his club on the follow through, and with a penalty drop the World Number Five was left to play his fifth shot to the green before two putting for a triple bogey seven.

McIlroy produced a closing 68 to finish tied for second with Mickelson, who recovered brilliantly to birdie three of his last five holes.

The Northern Irishman was left to rue both a string of missed birdie chances after some wonderful work from tee to green, and his two shot penalty in the third round for an incorrect drop

McIlroy thought he was alone in second place a stroke behind Lee after finishing his 3rd round, but tournament officials then ruled that he had taken a drop incorrectly on the second hole and adjusted his score to a double-bogey 7. That gave him a 70 for the round instead of 68

McIlroy had to take relief on the second hole when his ball ended up on a gallery crosswalk and went on to par the hole, but was later told by the caddy of playing partner Ricardo Gonzalez that he had his left foot on the white line marking the drop area, meaning he had not taken “full relief” according to the rules

Sony Open
Waialae CC
Honolulu, Hawaii

3 Canadians in the field include Brad Fritsch MC 69 76, Mike Weir MC73 72 and David Hearn 68 70, 67 69 -6

Round 4 Final

In a wild final round, where four players were in the mix with an hour to go, Jimmy Walker followed a clutch par save with three straight birdies to pull away from the pack. He closed with a 7-under 63 for a one-shot victory over Chris Kirk

Walker's big run began with a 12-foot par on the 14th hole. One shot behind Harris English, Walker rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole, and took the outright lead when English -- behind him in the final group -- failed to save par from a bunker.

Walker made a 7-foot birdie putt on the 16th, and then hit 7-iron into 6 feet for birdie on the par-3 17th. A par on the last hole made him wait just a little bit longer.

Kirk had a 30-foot eagle chip from just short of the green on the par-5 18th that would have forced a playoff. It stayed right of the hole, and Kirk made the birdie putt for a 66 to finish alone in second place.

Jerry Kelly (65) was alone in third. English never recovered from his bogey. He missed birdie putts on the last three holes for a 67.

Walker won the Frys.com Open in October, the first tournament of the new wraparound season. As the first multiple winner for the 2013-14 season, he is closing in on cracking the top 30 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

EUROPEAN TOUR
Volvo Golf Champions
Durban GC
South Africa

Round 4 Final

For the fourth year running Louis Oosthuizen began the calendar year with victory on home soil as he retained the Volvo Golf Champions in Durban.

Oosthuizen was one shot behind compatriot Branden Grace with two holes to play, but birdied them both to card a closing 68 and 12 under par total.

Grace had also completed a 68 in the group ahead to finish 11 under and watched on television as former Open Champion Oosthuizen holed from two feet on the 17th and then chipped to the same distance for another birdie on the short par four 18th.

That meant all seven European Tour events staged at Durban Country Club have now been won by South Africans, while eight of the last 11 tournaments in South Africa have been won by home players.

England's Tommy Fleetwood had held a one shot advantage heading into the final round and briefly stretched that to three thanks to a birdie at the second and mistakes from his rivals.

However, three bogeys in five holes from the fifth threw the tournament wide open

Zach Johnson wins at Kapalua.. world's hottest golfer...

On a Plantation Course at Kapalua that should be paradise for the game's longest hitters, Zach Johnson chipped in for his opening birdie and then hit four exquisite wedge shots on the back nine Monday to rally from two shots behind, close with a 7-under 66 and win the Hyundai Tournament of Champions

That was pivotal on the back nine, where five players had a chance to win. Johnson ran off four birdies in a five-hole stretch, all of them with a wedge in his hand, none of the shots particularly easy. He wound up with a one-shot win over Jordan Spieth, the perfect way to start a new year.

Johnson, starting his 11th season on the PGA TOUR, won for the 11th time in his career and moved to 7th in the FedExCup standings. Since his rookie season in 2004, only Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh have won more on the PGA TOUR. It also was Johnson's third win in his last six starts, dating to the BMW Championship outside Chicago in September that qualified him for this winners-only tournament in Kapalua

Webb Simpson, tied with Spieth and defending champion Dustin Johnson to start the final round, never caught up and closed with a 70. Simpson tied for third with Kevin Streelman, who had a 67. With his finish, however, Simpson moved to the top of the FedExCup standings.
Jason Dufner was four strokes back in fifth after a 69. Dustin Johnson made three bogeys before making his first birdie. He shot 73 and tied for sixth

Masters champion Adam Scott narrowly beat out Tiger Woods as the male player of the year in voting by the Golf Writers Association of America. Log jam atop the leaderboard at Kapalua ...Canadian players of the year.

PGA Tour
Hyundai Tournament of Champions

Coming off a sensational rookie season on the PGA TOUR, Jordan Spieth opened the new year by never coming close to bogey and making a 12-foot birdie putt on the last hole for a 7-under 66. That gave him a share of the lead at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions with fellow newcomer Michael Thompson, Chris Kirk and Webb Simpson

The wind off the west coast of Maui was the biggest surprise, shifting direction and speed throughout the opening round on a mostly sunny afternoon. But with an inch of rain overnight, the Plantation Course was soft enough that only two players in the 30-man field of PGA TOUR winners failed to break par
