FINAL

The inaugural EURASIA CUP finished in a 10-10 draw after a thrilling Asian fightback during the Saturday singles.

For much of the final day Asia threatened to produce a victory to rival Europe's 'Miracle at Medinah' in the 2012 Ryder Cup.

Thongchai Jaidee's side were whitewashed 5-0 in Thursday's fourballs and trailed 7-3 going into Saturday's ten singles matches, leaving Europe needing just three and a half points for victory.

But Jaidee kickstarted a stunning fightback by beating Ryder Cup hero Graeme McDowell 3 and 2 and after five further wins for Asia, the entire contest came down to the match between Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño and Japan's Hideto Tanihara.

Fernandez-Castaño eagled the par five 16th to get back on level terms before Tanihara saved par from a greenside bunker on the 17th to set up a nerve-wracking finish on the last.

Neither player was able to find a decisive birdie and after Fernandez-Castaño held his nerve to hole from three feet for par, he conceded Tanihara's shorter putt to ensure a tie.

Jimenez leads Europe in shut out of Team Asia

Friday’s Foursome Draw (Team Europe first):
9:40am: Miguel Angel JIMENEZ/Pablo LARRAZABAL vs Thongchai JAIDEE/ Kiradech APHIBARNRAT
9.55am: Thomas Bjorn/Thorbjorn OLESEN vs Prayad MARKSAENG/KIM Hyung-sung
10.10am: Victor DUBUISSON/Joost LUITEN vs  Koumei ODA/Hideto Tanihara
10.25am: Gonzalo FDEZ-CASTANO/Stephen GALLACHER vs SIDDIKUR Rahman/Anirban LAHIRI
10.40am: Graeme MCDOWELL/Jamie DONALDSON vs Gaganjeet BHULLAR/Nicholas FUNG

Thursday
Team Europe produced a dominant performance in the opening fourball session by winning all five matches against a shell-shocked Team Asia in the inaugural EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM.

European captain Miguel Angel Jiménez of Spain brilliantly led the way at the Glenmarie Golf & Country Club, partnering compatriot Pablo Larrazábal to a 2 & 1 victory over Team Asia captain Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand in the top match.

Frenchman Victor Dubuisson and Dutchman Joost Luiten combined effectively for a 3 & 2 triumph over Prayad Marksaeng of Thailand and Bangladeshi Siddikur Rahman in a match they never trailed before Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño of Spain, who eagled his first hole from the fairway, and Stephen Gallacher of Scotland completed a 4 & 3 victory over Anirban Lahiri and Gaganjeet Bhullar of India.

Koumei Oda and Hideto Tanihara of Japan took their match till the 18th hole before losing by 2-holes to Thomas Bjorn and Thorbjorn Olesen, both from Denmark.

Local Malaysian star Nicholas Fung raised hopes of an upset with three birdies in seven holes as he and partner Kim Hyung-sung of Korea raced to a 3-up lead over Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland and Jamie Donaldson of Wales but the Europeans showed their class by fighting back to a 3 & 1 victory to complete a day to forget for Thongchai’s men.

Jiménez, who sank two eagles and three birdies in the better ball format, was delighted to see his team race ahead in the inaugural contest. “Yeah, can't get anything better than that really.  I started with my match with Pablo and played good today and I don’t think there is a better way to lead a team,” said Jiménez.

Fernandez-Castaño nailed a magical eagle from the fairway on the first hole as he and Gallacher brushed aside the Indian pairing of Lahiri and Bhullar.

McDowell, who secured the winning point in Europe’s victory in The 2010 Ryder Cup, tipped his cap to partner Donaldson, who carried the last pairing home after falling 3-down early on. “We somehow managed to make the turn at 1-down which was huge and then this guy (Donaldson) just played phenomenal on the back nine, and I just had to just chill out and hang with him a little bit.  It was great to watch,” said McDowell.

Thursday’s Fourball Results (Team Europe first):
Miguel Angel JIMENEZ/Pablo LARRAZABAL bt Thongchai JAIDEE/ Kiradech APHIBARNRAT  2 & 1; Thomas Bjorn/Thorbjorn OLESEN bt Koumei ODA/Hideto Tanihara 2 Holes; Victor DUBUISSON/Joost LUITEN bt Prayad MARKSAENG/SIDDIKUR Rahman 3 & 2; Gonzalo FDEZ-CASTANO/Stephen GALLACHER bt Gaganjeet BHULLAR/Anirban LAHIRI 4 & 3; Graeme MCDOWELL/Jamie DONALDSON bt KIM Hyung-sung/Nicholas FUNG 3 & 1

Staal Family to sponsor PGA TOUR Canada event in Thunder Bay

INAUGURAL STAAL FOUNDATION OPEN PRESENTED BY TBAYTEL
TO BE PLAYED AT WHITEWATER GOLF CLUB JULY 14 – 20, 2014

THUNDER BAY, ON (March 24, 2014) In North America, the name Staal is synonymous with the highest levels of professional hockey. However, come July 2014, the Staal family -- brothers Eric, Marc, Jordan and Jared -- will be associated with another sport popular among NHL players and Canadians alike.

PGA TOUR Canada, the Staal family and the Thunder Bay Golf Classic tournament organization announced today that the Staal Family Foundation, a charitable trust fund with a strong focus on family, community and charity, has a three-year agreement to become the title sponsor of PGA TOUR Canada’s Thunder Bay Golf Classic, which will now be known as the Staal Foundation Open presented by TbayTel.

The announcement was made during a media conference at Tbaytel’s headquarters in Thunder Bay that included Eric Staal, captain of the Carolina Hurricanes, who attended via Skype as well as PGA TOUR Canada President Jeff Monday and Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel Executive Director Scott Smith as well as many local dignitaries.

When we heard PGA TOUR Canada was coming to Thunder Bay, we jumped at the chance to attach our name to the event,” said the elder Staal brother. “It’s going to be really exciting week of sport and entertainment and we think the Staal Family Foundation is a great fit. We love our hometown, and just like PGA TOUR Canada, we’re passionate about family, charity and our community.”

The Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel is the sixth tournament on the newly expanded 2014 PGA TOUR Canada schedule. As an added bonus the top three players on the PGA TOUR Canada Order of Merit following the Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel will earn exemptions into the RBC Canadian Open set to be played at Royal Montreal in Ile Bizard, Quebec.

The PGA TOUR Canada Season gets underway with 12 events starting with the PC Financial Open in Vancouver and culminating with the TOUR Championship of Canada presented by Freedom 55 Financial in September where the top five players on the Order of Merit will earn their Web.com Tour cards for the following season.
In addition to the Staal Family Foundation’s title sponsorship, Tbaytel, which is a significant economic driver and supporter of community events and initiatives in Thunder Bay, was previously announced as the presenting sponsor for the tournament.

As with all PGA TOUR events the net proceeds raised from the Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel will be directed to charity. An announcement will be made in the coming weeks regarding the specifics regarding charity and the Staal Foundation Open presented by Tbaytel

Monday wrap : Every breaks through at Bay Hill

PGA Tour
Arnold Palmer Invitational
Bay Hill GC
Tampa Florida

Canadian  David Hearn +1 70 72 73 74  T52

Round 4

The tee shot that Matt Every feared might be out-of-bounds on No. 9 somehow bounced along a cart path and led to an unlikely birdie. He surged to a three-shot lead when Adam Scott's touch with the putter vanished. Even with two bogeys on the last three holes, he missed a 4-foot par putt on the 18th, Every still closed with a 2-under 70.

The last bogey made him sweat out the finish. Keegan Bradley, who birdied the 16th and 17th holes, had a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th that would have forced a playoff. It was similar to the putt Tiger Woods has made so often to win at Bay Hill. Bradley's putt stayed left of the hole, and he finished one shot behind.

Every finished at 13-under 275, one shot ahead of Bradley, who needed two late birdies for a 72. Scott was third.

It was Every's first win in 93 starts on tour.

David Hearn (74) of Brantford, Ont., finished in a tie for 52nd at 1-over par

Maggert is a three-time PGA Tour winner who turned 50 in February. His consistent weekend included a 68 on Friday, a 69 on Saturday and he capped his debut performance at Fallen Oak with four birdies on the back nine on Sunday to earn the $240,000 paycheque

Andrade, who started the day tied with Fred Funk for the lead, shot a 71 to finish in second two strokes back.

The extra session involved seven players who finished the 72 holes of the second tournament of the 2014 NEC Series-PGA TOUR Latinoamérica season tied at 17-under par 267.

Outright leader by one shot at the beginning of the day, Rozo had a chance to win on the 72nd hole, but missed a nine-footer for birdie. Later, he went on to admit that a little bit of nerves on that putt cost him the win in regulation.

Tiger 'backs" out of Arnie's tournament

He may have won it 8 times including the last 2, but it's never good news for anyone, except the rest of the field when Tiger pulls out of an event.

He has had to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational  because of persistent pain in his back, and for those of you who have never had one, you just cannot play golf with a wonky back. Hell you can't walk, run and God help you when you sneeze !!

From his website..Unfortunately, my back spasms and the pain haven't subsided."

He had to withdraw after 13 holes of the final round at the Honda Classic three weeks ago because of  back spasms and pain in his lower back. He tried to defend his title the following week at Doral, only for his back to flare up again in the final round. He closed with a 78, the highest Sunday score of his PGA Tour career.

This is only the second time that Woods has not played Bay Hill The Masters, which is 3 weeks away, is the only major Woods has never missed.

Website.."It's too early to know about the Masters, and I will continue to be evaluable and work closely with my doctors,"

He first showed signs of back pain at Bethpage Black at The Barclays in 2012, which he attributed to a soft bed at his hotel.

Woods is off to the worst start of his 18 years on tour. At Torrey Pines,Woods shot his highest score on American soil with a 79 to miss the 54-hole cut. He tied for 41st in the Dubai Desert Classic a week later for his worst finish in that event.

Jack Nicklaus has always said that Tiger would surpass his record of 18 major championships... as long as he stayed healthy !!

At 38, with years of great golf seemingly still ahead, his back problem have temporarily derailed his career.  I believe, as fit as he is that he should be able to manage whatever the problem is, look at Freddie Couples still winning on the Champions Tour as an example.

However you must also remember Tiger has been swinging a golf club around his back since he was 2, that's a lot of wear and tear no matter how fit he is..

With the Master's approaching, I do not expect him to play at all before unless he is sure it won't jeopardize his chances of teeing it up at Augusta..
