Park makes history with US Open win..

Inbee Park leads the field by 4 shots, and she kept it, winning the US Open 74 -8 280, her 3rd straight major, the first woman to complete that feat since Babe Zaharias in 1950.

USGA - US WOMEN’S OPEN
COURSE: Sebonack Golf Club (6,821 yards, 6,237 metres, par 72).
PURSE: TBA ($3.25 million in 2012). Winner’s share: TBA ($585,000 in 2012).

CANADIANS     Kirby Dreher MC 77 81, Stephanie Sherlock MC 78 78, Nicole Zhang (a) MC 77 78, Brooke Henderson (a) +19 71 76 83 77, Isabelle Beisiegel MC 84 86, Maude-Aimee Leblanc +15 69 77 77 80, Lorie Kane MC 77 75, Jessica Shepley

Round 4 notes.

lpga.com   Inbee Park became only the second player in LPGA history to win the first three majors in a season with a four-stroke victory over I.K. Kim on Sunday at the U.S. Women’s Open conducted by the USGA. The 24-year-old South Korean fired a final-round 74 at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y. to finish at 8-under-par 280.
Today’s victory, Park’s fourth-career LPGA major championship victory and second U.S. Women’s Open triumph, sets her up for a date with destiny in early August at the RICOH Women’s British Open, played at the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. She will attempt to become the first player, male or female, to win four professional major championships in one season.

Park, who won the 2012 LPGA Official Money List and Vare Trophy for lowest scoring average, is the first player in the modern era to win the first three majors in a season.

On a hazy day where the clouds cast a shadow over Peconic Bay in eastern Long Island, Park found a way to deliver in the same steady way that she has for most of the past year. Opening the day with a four-stroke lead over I.K. Kim, Park made the turn in 1-over-par 36, but extended that lead to five shots as Kim fired 2-over-par 37 on the same nine.

A birdie by Park at the 10th hole extended the lead to six shots before back-to-back bogies at 14 and 15 reduced the lead back to four shots with three holes to play. Both Park (-8) and Kim (-4) closed with pars on the final three holes to become two of three players to finish the week under par.

2011 U.S. Women’s Open champ So Yeon Ryu (-1), who lost to her best friend Park in a one-hole playoff last week in Arkansas, was the third player to finish under par for the week

COURSE: Carton House Golf Club (7,271 yards, 6,649 metres, par 72).
PURSE: $2.63 million. Winner’s share: $437,895.

Round 4notes.

Paul Casey returned to form in sensational style with a brilliant closing round in tough conditions at Carton House to win The Irish Open.

The Englishman, who has had problems with form and fitness since winning his last European Tour title two and a half years ago, finished with a five under par 67 in strong wind, heavy rain and finally sunshine to finish 14 under for the week.

That was three better than overnight leader Joost Luiten, who went round in 74, and England’s Robert Rock – whose 71 saw him finish as a runner-up for the second time in this event after he was beaten in a play-off by Shane Lowry in 2009

Kaufman wasted little time getting into the red numbers during the final round with a birdie at the opening hole. The recent Texas Tech University graduate then bogeyed the par-4 fifth before recording another birdie at the par-4 eighth

The 44-year-old made a 2-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole Sunday to beat Chris Stroud at the Travelers Championship.

Stroud, who also was looking for his first title, had chipped in from 51 feet on the 18th hole, to get to 12 under par and force the playoff.

But Duke made the better approach shot on the second extra hole, bouncing his ball in front of the flag and rolling it close.

Graham DeLaet finished a stroke back in third place with a 269. Watson finished fourth, two shots behind, after making a 6 on the par-3 16th hole

The victory at Pinnacle Country Club is Park’s second consecutive win following a major championship triumph at the Wegmans LPGA Championship two weeks ago. But it was more of an adventure on the back nine than the 60-year-old Sadler expected after a building a five-stroke lead through the first eight holes of the final round

Stadler settled down after bogeys on the 14th and 15th, making par on the next three holes even though he wasn't always in the fairway. Following a perfect drive on 18, he pushed his approach into the right greenside bunker. After putting his third shot 12 feet past the hole, he faced a putt that brought back a positive memory, and took him back to the winner's circle

Fred Couples' final-round 66 was the best of the day and put him at 12 under, but he bogeyed the final hole. Mark O'Meara, Bernhard Langer, David Frost and Jeff Sluman were among seven players tied for third at 205.

Round 4 notes  Brooks Koepka showed the grit, determination and endless talent of a future world-beater as the American stormed to a three-shot victory at the Scottish Hydro Challenge hosted by Macdonald Hotels and Resorts to gain automatic promotion to The European Tour.
The hype surrounding the Floridian on the European Challenge Tour this year has been likened to that of Martin Kaymer in 2006, with some experienced touring professionals stating that Koepka is the best they have ever seen.

The 23 year old has lived up to that high praise during an incredible 11 month period on the Challenge Tour, which culminated in a gloriously resolute performance at Macdonald Spey Valley Golf Club as he defied extremely trying weather conditions and long rain delays to lift the title.
His final and most important of four Challenge Tour titles came thanks to a three under par 68 and because it is his third victory in 2013, the West Palm Beach native is promoted straight to The European Tour – following in the footsteps of the likes of Edoardo Molinari and Kristoffer Broberg.

Justin Rose won this US Open...Phil didn't lose it !

In the end it turned out to be a Rose for Fathers Day as Justin Rose won the 113th US Open with a brilliant closing E 70, 281 total and a 2 shot win over Jason Day and Phil Mickelson on a very tough Merion GC.

Justin won this championship and it will be celebrated throughout Europe and around the world but I fear on this side of the pond it will be remembered as the one that Phil lost, which is wrong and unfair for so many reasons.

Do you remember Winged Foot in 2006 when Phil was leading standing on the 72nd tee?  He drove it 60 yards off line into the concession stands, tried a miracle 3 wood hook shot... well the rest of it is history..

Who won that year ??   Can't remember ??.. Geoff Ogilvy of Australia is the answer and there were no meetings after with the President or appearances on Letterman.  However as unpopular a win as that was, at least Phil did lose it..

This time Justin won it, and Phil played terrific golf, with a bounce here or there he may have won, but this was not the US Open that Phil lost, anymore than it was the US Open that Jason Day who T2 with Phil lost..

If you take the time to follow the story of Justin Rose it is a good one full of broken hearts, tragedy, perseverance, dedication, disaster and triumph..

On top of that he is a gentleman, a great family man and now the US Open champion..

Well done Rosey, even  though you may not get the respect over here you deserve.

Sunday at the US Open..Mickelson the only player under par leads at Merion

Yesterday I asked, will Merion allow anyone under par ??

The answer is yes, but just one and he's the leader going in to the Sunday finale. Phil Mickelson drilled a beautiful 4 iron to the 256 par 3 17th, he said he just stood and admired it, and the ball ended up 4 feet below the hole, he made the improbable birdie while so many others were making bogey, it was like stealing 2 shots from the field.

His even par 70 has him at 209 -1 and that score may be enough to win him his first US Open on his 43rd birthday, he has been second 5 times..

The pattern is clear at Merion, score if you can somewhere between 1-13 then hang on for the last 5 holes, especially 17 and 18..

Hunter Mahan E 210,will play with Mickelson and his 69 included the bogey bogey finish. Charl Schwartzel, the same story, and he will play with steady Steve Stricker 70 also E 210.

Justin Rose 71, 211 and Luke Donald 71, 211 both finished bogey bogey, in fact Donald held the lead alone until those final two holes... They will play together

Billy Horschel 72, 211 is still in contention, as is Jason Day 68, 212 and Ricky Fowler with the low round of the day 67, 213. He was actually 3 under par on the back nine so it can be done.

Tiger shot himself out of it with 76, as did Rory with 75..

As for the two Canadians, David Hearn 73 is at +10 220, and Mike Weir 75 +13 223...

There just hasn't been a 65 or 66 in Merion all week, even early on Thursday and Friday while it was soft. Yesterday she just got firmer and drier in warm sunshine and more of the same is expected today.

When the day started there were 30 players within 5 shots... Today there are 10..

So I ask the same question again today.. Will Merion let anyone under par??

Whoever that is from the group above will be the winner..

So much for Merion being vulnerable !! Saturday at the US Open

Earlier this week I wrote about all the rain that was happening and more that was predicted at Merion and to be honest along with many other pundits, went on to opine that the soft fairways and receptive greens would result in a dart throwing contest that would open up the championship to anybody..

Well Merion did get soaked with 7 inches of rain before play started on Thursday, but the big storm with 3 more due on Thursday blew through with only half an inch of damage, and play resumed that day at 1215 in ideal, I mean ideal scoring conditions which have continued by and large right up until they called it off at 8.30pm last night.

The result ??

There are a whopping 2 players under par, Billy Horschel 72 67 -1 and Phil Mickelson 67 72 -1 and they are your leaders although there are still 68 players going back out there at 715am to finish their rounds

In their beds this morning at even par and T3 are, Luke Donald 68 72, Steve Stricker 71 69 and Justin Rose 71 69.

Big names.... Tiger 73 70 +3, Rory 73 70 +3, Ernie 71 72 +3

It looks like +8 will be the cut line... The point is Merion is playing to a stroke average of 75.25 with bogeys leading birdies 764- 245 !!and warm sunny weather is in place for the weekend and so the course continues to dry out, fairways firmer, greens harder.. you get the picture

Consider these names that have already jetted out of Philadelphia for the weekend elsewhere or at least have a taxi on standby..

Brandt Snedeker has made 1 birdie in 2 days and at 74 74 +8 he has to wait this morning, so he still has a chance..

Graeme MsDowell, former champion, playing well this year.. 76 77 for his first MC in eight starts

Louis Oosthuizen...shot 75 then WD

Keegan Bradley with all of 3 birdies but 2 doubles shoots 77 75...bye.

Bubba Watson never known for his ability to hit fairways in reg., at 71 76 +7 may just get in

Dustin Johnson, tons of star power  71 77 +8 also waiting..

Angel Cabrera 74 81 a former champion, in ideal scoring conditions

Jim Furyk  has made the cut 16 of 18 US Opens...77 79... make it 16 of 19...

Zack Johnson hits it straight, a lot of people picked him in the top 10.....74 77  bye..

As for the Canadians only Adam Hadwin has finished 2 rounds and he has MC 81 76...... MacKenzie Hughes has a chance, 75 and is +4 thru 9 so at +9 as he returns this morning..... Also Mike Weir 72 and +3 thru 10 so +5 as he returns..........David Hearn 78 but is only +1 thru 10 holes so has a shot......... Ryan Yip 76 but is  +5 thru 16 so +11 doesn't look good..

The upshot of all this is that we have a hell of a weekend ahead, with Tiger, Rory, Phil, Ernie, Luke, Stricks, Rosey all in contention..

The question is, which one of them can keep it around even par which is about all Merion will concede, and who amongst would have thought that on Wednesday ??

Not me....

All this rain makes Merion vulnerable, now anyone can win

Weather has already played a key role in this year's US Open and it doesn't start until Thursday.

Three inches of rain in 24 hours off tropical storm Andrea, plus the deluge that fell last week means this beautiful hilly little course at Merion will not be running firm and fast, rather soft and vulnerable, which in my opinion open it up to the field. It was so wet on Monday they cancelled the practice round in the afternoon

Remember most of the field has never played here, since the last US Open was David Graham's win in 1981, 32 years ago.

The rough is deep, thick and juicy, and cut right to the edge of the fairways and greens, but with 5 par 4's under 375 yards, these guys will be hitting irons off the tee and wedges into the greens which will negate but not remove the rough from the equation.

There is a 40% chance of rain and thunderstorms today, and 50% on Thursday with the worst of the unsettled weather pattern  (tornadoes are in the forecast again across the mid west), but right now Saturday and Sunday look mostly sunny and warm.

In my opinion despite the fact the USGA will tuck pins to try and protect Merion's dignity, scoring will be low this year because the course is soft. Low scoring means anyone can win.

The US Open is supposed to be the sternest test of golf in America.  It is their national championship, however mother nature may have other thoughts in mind..

Fairways is back, every Thursday morning 9-10am www.nextsportstar.com I will be hosting and producing with great guests, video highlights, live scoreboards, call ins, golf tips.

My guests this week in the US Open preview, 905am Lorne Rubenstein, and 930am Ian Hutchinson'

François Calmels fired a sizzling 11 birdies in a final-round 65 to come from behind and win his second Challenge Tour title of the season on an eventful last day at the D+D Real Czech Challenge Open.

The Frenchman, who began the day three shots off the lead at Golf & Spa Kunetická Hora, finished with an aggregate score of 22 under par, three clear of the English trio of Robert Dinwiddie, overnight leader Adam Gee and Sam Walker, to pick up a cheque for €25,600 and with it move to second in the 2013 Challenge Tour Rankings.

Hearn, Hadwin and Hughes qualify for US Open.....live scoring links to all

Today there are 35 Canadians trying to qualify for the US Open. Played over 36 holes in one day, sectional qualifying is a test of skill and endurance, with only a handful of available spots at each site, the number of qualifying spots is determined by the quality and quantity of the field at each location. With qualifying taking place at 11 sites around the country, U.S.-based sectional qualifying is known as "golf's longest day"

For example Roger Sloane has just played his front nine in -7 29. I will expand coverage and give all their scores as they come in each day.
