David Hearn birdied his 1st hole and is in 4th place at -8 playing the Nationwide Tour Championship at the Ralston Creek Course in Daniel Island, Charleston.
Jon Mills started his day at 9am T47 at +4 so he had a lot to do to get into the T25..
He started well with 2 birdies on the front nine out in -2, 34
He then birdied 10 to get to -3 and I thought here we go !!
However he took a double bogey 7 on the par 5 11th, then bogeyed 16..
He has fought back with a birdie on 17, but has just bogeyed 18..
34 out, 38 in E 72 .. Jon stands T38..
David is now at E through 7 holes -7 total and T4... birdies at 1 and 5 framing bogey's at 3 and 4..
2pm Birdie 2 at the par 3 9th -8 total -1 35 out and in 4th place alone..
David is 9 holes away from getting his tour card..
UPDATE 5.30pm
David made bogey at 10 then was steady as a rock with pars til he made birdie at 17 to get in at -1 71
Knost and Steele have just completed a 4 hole playoff which Brenden Steele just won so the results are final
David Hearn will finish at #21 and as a result re-joins the PGA Tour next year..

McDowell wins at Valderrama, Shanghai is next...
The man from Portrush Northern Ireland, Graeme McDowell has just shot 74 for a -3 281 total to win the Andalucia Vaderrama Masters, his 3rd win of his magical year, and he did it in very difficult windy conditions that make this Ryder Cup course so tough..
In fact another Irishman Damien McGrane was leading at -5 after holing out from a bunker on 15, but then the wind and his nerves got the better of him and he finished 6,6,5 to end up at -1 283 for 2nd place along with Soren Kjeldsen (69) and Gareth Maybin (76)

Its 520pm on Friday and the golf day has long since wrapped up in Spain and the far east and is winding down at Q school and on the Nationwide Tour..

Nationwide Tour.. our "other" Canucks
While I watch Hearn and Mills in this critical weekend at the Tour Championship, I have been taking a look at our other Canucks who play on this tour and how they finished their years..
We often have 7 or 8 guys playing most week's and I must admit without interviewing them all individually that it has been a disappointing season for all but the above duo..
Baryla, Chris ( Calgary)
I spoke with Chris via text and he has been recovering gradually from a back operation this year.
He got his tour card in 2009 by finishing 19th on the Nationwide money list.
I assume he will request a medical exemption for next year on the PGA Tour.
He had only 7 starts, making 2 cuts on tour this year.. His world ranking is 424 and he is 237th on the PGA money list..
He made 4 starts on the NW tour as well with 1 cut made and is 207th on that money list
Brown, Ted (Calgary )
Ted played in 24 events this year, made 10 cuts had a T10 and 2 T25's. He only made 35,000 and is 121 on the money list. His only PGAtour event was our Canadian Open where he MC..
It was his first full year on this tour despite the fact he is now 31..
DeCorso, Bryan ( Guelph)
I remember the excitement in 2008 when he was in contention for a T25 finish and possible tour card before a late season swoon ended his year at 40th.
This year he has never contended 24 events, only 8 cuts and just over 18,000 He has lost his world ranking and is at 153 on this money list
Fortin-Simard Keven (Roberval, Que.)
Played the CanTour in 2008 and on the E-Tour in 2009.. Only made 8 starts on the NW tour this year with 3 cuts made and is a lowly 202 on the money list as a result
Jarosch, Barrett (Edmonton)
Barrett played a full sked of 25 events, made 11 cuts and had 5 T25's and made just over 48,000 and is at 100 on the money list.. I just don't remember him contending for a win this year, but he will be back to try again next season...
Morland IV, David ( North Bay)
The man from North Bay is on the wrong side of 40 now and only played in 12 events this year with 5 cuts made.. His schedule has been diminishing since his full status on tour days in 2008
As a result he has slipped to 175 on the money list. I will say he is one of the nicest guys we have interviewed on Fairways, he has a young family and is still a long time away from any dreams of the Champions Tour...
Do you remember when he did this ??? At the Nationwide Tour Championship in 2003 and 2005, changed into Austin Powers and Elvis Presley costumes on Halloween during last hole of play in the final round
Risdon, Dustin (Calgary)
He had a solid rookie year in 2009 but fell off this year with 16 starts and only 6 cuts made.. He did manage a T3 at the Rex Hospital Open a tourney reduced to 54 holes.. He is 115 on this money list and 464 in the world.
Trudeau, Julian (Montreal)
Not much to say about his year 18 events only 2 cuts made and 192 on the money list.
So Risdon ,Jarosch, and Brown will all be back next year on this tour and we shall see what happens with Baryla, Hearn and Mills, all hopefully will not be back because they will be on the PGA tour
Plus we will hopefully have some new blood from the CanTour !!!

Jon's undoing came at 9,10,11 where he went bogey, double, bogey +4 and in a text here is what he told me. Nine was a 3 putt, 10 he was 3 off the tee after driving in the water and on 11 he missed the green and didn't get up and down..

Italian sensation Matteo Manassero rewrote The European Tour record books as he stormed to victory at the CASTELLÓ MASTERS Costa Azahar.
At 17 years and 188 days, Manassero became the youngest winner in European Tour history, beating the previous record set by New Zealand's Danny Lee, who was 18 years and 213 days old when he won the 2008 Johnnie Walker Classic.
And he breaks the legendary Seve Ballesteros' record as the youngest full European Tour Member by 12 days.
The former British Amateur Champion, who shot to prominence when he won the Silver Medal by finishing 13th at The Open Championship in 2009, carded a four under par final round to finish 16 under, four clear of Ignacio Garrido.

In a swift and shocking finish, Jonathan Byrd won a three-man playoff Sunday with a hole-in-one on the fourth extra hole in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Moments earlier, Byrd stood on the 18th green with Martin Laird and Cameron Percy as they discussed whether there was enough light to continue. They agreed to play one more hole -- the 204-yard 17th at the TPC Summerlin.
And the playoff essentially ended with one swing.
Graham DeLaet ended up T18, 269 ( 69 63 70 67) and is projected to move up to 98 on the money list

Jon's undoing came at 9,10,11 where he went bogey, double, bogey +4 and in a text here is what he told me. Nine was a 3 putt, 10 he was 3 off the tee after driving in the water and on 11 he missed the green and didn't get up and down..

Italian sensation Matteo Manassero rewrote The European Tour record books as he stormed to victory at the CASTELLÓ MASTERS Costa Azahar.
At 17 years and 188 days, Manassero became the youngest winner in European Tour history, beating the previous record set by New Zealand's Danny Lee, who was 18 years and 213 days old when he won the 2008 Johnnie Walker Classic.
And he breaks the legendary Seve Ballesteros' record as the youngest full European Tour Member by 12 days.
The former British Amateur Champion, who shot to prominence when he won the Silver Medal by finishing 13th at The Open Championship in 2009, carded a four under par final round to finish 16 under, four clear of Ignacio Garrido.

In a swift and shocking finish, Jonathan Byrd won a three-man playoff Sunday with a hole-in-one on the fourth extra hole in the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Moments earlier, Byrd stood on the 18th green with Martin Laird and Cameron Percy as they discussed whether there was enough light to continue. They agreed to play one more hole -- the 204-yard 17th at the TPC Summerlin.
And the playoff essentially ended with one swing.
Graham DeLaet ended up T18, 269 ( 69 63 70 67) and is projected to move up to 98 on the money list

Mills tied for the lead at the Winn-Dixie..
While David Hearn failed to make the cut at this Winn Dixie Jacksonville Open at the TPC Sawgrass, Oshawa's Jon Mills who started the day at 31 on the money list is tied for the lead as they play round 4 at 2pm Sunday..
This of course is the last full field event of the year and both Mills and Hearn will be in the field of 60 for next weekends Tour Championship and of course the T25 get their cards on the PGA tour next year..

John Daly threatened by a 'hacker'....
John Daly has had his twitter and facebook accounts compromised by a hacker, who has threatened both him and his wife and kids..
Daly says his twitter/ facebook accounts were hacked when his email password was stolen by someone who then went on twitter and facebook and made posts pretending to be Daly..
His wife then went on twitter and confronted the hacker who then according to Daly said " if you want your account back you know what to do', and threatened to get Daly and members of his family..
Daly has been in touch with the FBI who are investigating.

Final scores from Stage 1..Q School... Yip wins in Nevada
The first wave of the first stage at Q school is complete and several of our Canucks have qualified to move onto stage 2, including Ryan Yip who won his event in Dayton, Nevada with a brilliant -17, 271 (69,65,70,67) score. Ryan played on the Canadian Tour this year, he is out of Calgary and went to Kent State University for his college career..
There are 13 first-stage events with fields of approximately 78 players at each one. First stage events are being held in seven different states from Oct. 19-22, 26-29 and 27-30, so we will have more Canucks to follow for the next 2 weeks..

Canadian Graham Gunn leads European Senior Tour event in Sicily
Graham Gunn the 2006 Canadian Senior PGA champion is leading the Sicilian Senior Open, an event on the European Senior Tour. He is the golf academy instructor at White Sands GC in Orleans/Ottawa these days.

A superb putting display helped unheralded Canadian Graham Gunn grab the lead on the opening day of the inaugural Sicilian Senior Open on the European Senior Tour.
On only his fifth appearance of the season, Gunn outshone some of the Senior Tour’s leading lights – including home hero Costantino Rocca and all-time leading career money winner Carl Mason of England – with a four under par round of 68 to lead by two strokes from Argentina’s Horacio Carbonetti and Spaniard Domingo Hospital.
Astonishingly, Gunn needed just 24 putts at Il Picciolo Golf Club, on the holiday island of Sicily, where driving rain rendered low scoring doubly difficult. His lead would have been even more commanding were it not for a double bogey at the par three eighth, where he lost his ball after overclubbing. The only other blemish in a round which included seven birdies came at the fiendishly tough 11th hole, which at 472 yards in length did not see a birdie all day.
Gunn, who is in need of a big week in order to upgrade his conditional card for next season, said: “It was tough going in the conditions, but in some ways the rain actually helped at times, because the ball isn’t running too far off the fairways. If the fairways were hard, you could end up way into the trees. Luckily I drove the ball really well today, and then when I did get in trouble off the tee, more often than not my putter rescued me. So it was a good day.”

Conducted by the International Golf Federation, which is comprised of the national governing bodies of golf in more than 110 countries, the biennial World Amateur Golf Team Championships will be contested over four rounds of stroke play with the top two scores from each team counting towards the team total. The event, first contested in 1964, features both a team and individual component.
The competition is rotated among three geographic zones of the world: Asia-Pacific, North America and Europe-Africa. The 2012 championship will be contested in Turkey.

Els wins Grand Slam TV Event
Folks, I am not a big fan of this event since it is just a TV ratings grab, so I didn't see much of it but here is the published report from european.your.com in Barbados..
SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda -- Ernie Els ran off three straight birdies on the back nine Wednesday and turned a three-shot deficit into a one-shot victory over David Toms in the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.
Els, an alternate who was filling in for Masters champion Phil Mickelson, closed with a 2-under 69 and earned US$600,000. It was his second victory in the 36-hole event for the year's four major champions. Els also won in 1997 when it was at Poipu Bay.
This time, he figured he was playing for second place.
Toms, another alternate who replaced British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, chipped in for birdie on No. 12 and stretched his lead to three shots when Els bogeyed the 13th. Els made the first of his successive birdies on the 14th at Port Royal Golf Course, but his hopes for a two-shot swing ended when Toms again chipped in, this time for par.
"When a guy does it once, you're thinking, 'Good shot.' When he does it twice in three holes, you're thinking maybe he's destined to win this thing," Els said. "It took a bit of the pressure off me in a way, where I freewheeled it, tried to see how close I could get to him."
The turning point came on the 15th, when Els made birdie and Toms bogeyed for a share of the lead. Els pulled ahead with his third straight birdie on the 15th, and he holed a 10-foot par putt on the 17th to keep his one-shot advantage.
"Made a very big putt there," said Els, who finished at 5-under 137. "I was missing those putts. Maybe I was owed one, and that was it."
Toms shot 71 in his first appearance in the PGA Grand Slam since 2001, when he won the PGA Championship. He earned US$300,000. U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell (73) and PGA champion Martin Kaymer (71) tied for third, eight shots behind, and each earned $225,000

The PGA tour makes it's annual stop in Vegas where Justin Timberlake who is a golf fanatic brings in all his celebrity pals to raise money for the Childrens Hospital. Delaet and Ames are there, Alena Sharp has made the long trip to the new event in Malaysia, but my focus will be on our guys on the Nationwide tour, especially Hearn and Mills down at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Verde as they play in the last full field event of the year with so much on the line for so many. Sergio also returns to host his tournament on his home course in Spain on the Euro tour and we have Canucks at Q school..

DeLaet secures tour card, Hearn slips with a 74..Golf wrap
It was quite a weekend around the globe in golf with Paddy winning in Malaysia, Graham DeLaet virtually securing his PGA card in California, David Hearn moving to 26th on the money list in Miami

The Race to Dubai continues in Spain the next 2 weeks, at the Castello Masters then the Andalucia Valderrama Masters before heading to the far east for 3, the WGC HSBC in China worth $7m, then the Barclays Singapore Open worth $6m followed by the UBS Hong Kong Open.
Then it all wraps up in mid November at the Dubai World Championship worth $7.5m and of course the $10 in bonus prizes.

Remember he was ahead by 3 shots at the start of play at the Frys.com in California, then was caught by the pack on his back nine before making birdie at 16, then holing a wedge for eagle on 17 to get to -15, 269 to edge Bo Van Pelt and Alex Prugh by a shot.. He moves from 182 to 72nd on the money list

Note Paddy Harrington won the Iskandar Johor Open in Malaysia, his first tournament title in two years. He shot -3 69 in the final round for an overall 20-under-par 268
He started the day 5 shots clear and won it by 3 at the Horizon Hills G & CC on the Asian Tour.
His last win came in 2008 at the US PGA Championship.
The Race to Dubai continues in Spain the next 2 weeks, at the Castello Masters then the Andalucia Valderrama Masters before heading to the far east for 3, the WGC HSBC in China worth $7m, then the Barclays Singapore Open worth $6m followed by the UBS Hong Kong Open.
Then it all wraps up in mid November at the Dubai World Championship worth $7.5m and of course the $10 in bonus prizes.

Martin crumbles, Green wins Portugal Masters
Earlier I posted that Pablo Martin was leading the Portugal Masters but I did say things would change...

Liverpool has just been soundly beaten 2-0 at Goodison Park by Everton in the day's biggest derby match and they did it under the watchful eye of their new owner John Henry of New England Sports Ventures' who acquired the club on Friday afternoon.
Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta got the goals.
I have come to know George Gillett through Steven Brunt at the Globe and Mail who befriended George through his appearances with us on Primetime Sports and while over at Anfield covering the team.
Gillett I can assure you has been dragged through the mud unfairly by the Liverpool faithful and it's because of his partnership with the egomaniac Tom Hicks. George may be fabulously wealthy but anyone who has met or listened to him knows that he has his feet firmly on the ground and has nothing but care and respect and admiration for Liverpool FC and their supporters, despite what you have seen and heard recently from the Anfield faithful..
A combination of the worldwide recession and a Liverpool squad that is now an unheard of bottom of the Premier League have hardly been within his control, and I don't have all the final numbers yet but rest assured he has taken a huge financial bath.

Hearn bidding for PGA Tour card...2nd in Miami
David Hearn has had a great year on the Nationwide Tour. For a while, as I wrote earlier in the year, he was the best player on tour . As is so often the case he has cooled recently but great news he is a shot off the lead after round 2 at the Miccosukee in Miami.. He stands 30th on the money list.

David Duval is T3 68,65 and I saw a special on him 2 weeks ago from his home in Denver and he is confident it is just a matter of time before he regains the form he had as world number1. He hates the grind of the world tour, loves his wife and her kids and says he wants them to see for themselves how good he used to be.

David Duval is T3 68,65 and I saw a special on him 2 weeks ago from his home in Denver and he is confident it is just a matter of time before he regains the form he had as world number1. He hates the grind of the world tour, loves his wife and her kids and says he wants them to see for themselves how good he used to be.

Bubba Watson loses his father
This has just come across the wire and I have copied this from the Golf Channel website. Knowing Bubba he will be devastated so I thought I'd post this..
Bubba Watson’s father died today.
Gerry Watson, who taught his son to play golf growing up in their hometown of Bagdad, Fla., had been battling throat cancer. A former Green Beret, he was a giant influence on his son’s life. He died in Pensacola, Fla., where he had made his new home.
“I'm playing this for him and representing the United States," Bubba said of his father on the eve of the Ryder Cup in Wales two weeks ago. “More than likely I am never going to be in the military, so this is the chance to be like my dad.”
Watson first let his fans know of his father’s death through his Twitter account.
“Everyone, it’s a sad day for my family!!” Watson tweeted. “My dad passed.”
Bubba was named after his father, but he’s never gone by the name Gerry.
"I’d say 10 seconds after I was born, my daddy took a good look at me,” Bubba once said. “He said I was so fat and ugly, `Let's call him Bubba.'”
Bubba attributed his success to his father, the only swing coach he ever knew.
“My dad taught me everything I know,” said Watson, who broke through in June to win his first PGA Tour event, The Travelers. “I've never had a lesson. My dad, he took me to the golf course when I was 6 years old and just told me he was going to be in the woods looking for his ball. He just told me to take this 9-iron and beat it down the fairway. And now look at me, after beating a 9-iron on the fairway, coming from Bagdad, Fla., I never dreamed.”
Watson and his wife, Angie, are headed to Pensacola to be with family, according to Watson's management team. Bubba has asked that anyone who wants to honor his father's memory can do so by making a donation in Gerry Watson Sr.'s name to the Green Beret Foundation at http://www.greenberetfoundation.org/.

Heath Slocum was in a three-way tie for the coming down the stretch at this McGladrey Classic in Sea Island, Georgia. Robert Allenby pushed his tee shot on the 18th hole and took double bogey. Then, David Toms three-putted from just inside 15 feet on the 16th where Slocum holed a 50 footer for birdie.
Now he was 2 shots clear of Bill Haas. He made bogey on the final hole but still finished at 14-under 266 a shot clear.
Haas won last week at the Viking Classic and his 2nd place finish was worth $432,000, which moved him to No. 18 on the money list.
Slocum earned $720,000, which moved him to No. 29 on the money list. The top 30 earn invitations to the Masters.
Graham DeLaet had a solid week with a T25 finish.. He is at 114 on the Money list
Joe Durant by the way moved up to 115 on the Money List with his T6..

PGA Tour
Heath Slocum was in a three-way tie for the coming down the stretch at this McGladrey Classic in Sea Island, Georgia. Robert Allenby pushed his tee shot on the 18th hole and took double bogey. Then, David Toms three-putted from just inside 15 feet on the 16th where Slocum holed a 50 footer for birdie.
Now he was 2 shots clear of Bill Haas. He made bogey on the final hole but still finished at 14-under 266 a shot clear.
Haas won last week at the Viking Classic and his 2nd place finish was worth $432,000, which moved him to No. 18 on the money list.
Slocum earned $720,000, which moved him to No. 29 on the money list. The top 30 earn invitations to the Masters.
Graham DeLaet had a solid week with a T25 finish.. He is at 114 on the Money list
Joe Durant by the way moved up to 115 on the Money List with his T6..
I told you there is a lot at stake at this time of year !!

CHAMPIONS Tour
It wasn't easy, he blew a 3 shot lead, but Mark O'Meara has won his first major, the Senior Players Championship in Potomac Maryland, on this senior circuit. Micheal Allen caught him with a birdie on 17 and forced a playoff, which O'Meara won with a par 4.

Brilliant Kaymer wins at St Andrews, his 4th in a row !!
Watching the 10th Alfred Dunhill Links championship's final round from St Andrew's brings you great pictures of the holes that even for those of you who have never played the Old Course, are familiar.
What the telly doesn't bring you is the smell. My mother who spent much of her adult life going back and forth between here and her beloved Scotland used to say " Son, I miss the smell of the salt sea air". She now lives right on the Firth of Forth and enjoys that special fresh, bracing breeze everyday.
Martin Kaymer has just birdied the road hole (17) and then 18 from off the path dissecting the fairway to win by 3 shots at -17, it's his 4th win in a row including the PGA championship and the Ryder Cup, and although there is still a way to go, he has a stranglehold on the Race to Dubai as well, nearly 1m euros ahead of Graeme McDowell.
Kaymer, winner of the US PGA Championship in August and the KLM Open in the Netherlands last month, shot a brilliant 66 in cold and windy conditions to beat England's Danny Willett
Lee Westwood, needed a top two finish to replace Woods as World Number One,just finished T11th with a 73.
I have been writing and broadcasting about this kid for years and as Dougie Donnelly has just said on the TV coverage ' 4 wins in a row including a major and he's only 25, the world is his oyster'
To think he could have won it last year if he hadn't needed 6 weeks off due to a foot injury he suffered in a go-cart accident..
He said afterward that Lee Westwood was the number 1 player in the world right now, although at -7 Westwood has not taken over that spot this week, but you can bet that Kaymer, currently 6th in the world will own that #1 spot himself, sooner rather than later.

Tour wrap ups for Day 2..

Two older guys are on top at Sea Island in the second of the Fall Series..
They are,David Toms 43, and Joe Durant, 46 neither of whom have won since 2006. Toms is secure for 2011 (58th in the money list) while Durant is not at 131st.
Toms, 64,66 had a 10-under 130 total . He has won 12 times on tour, nine in warm climates
"Here we are again, in the South and on Bermuda grass, and it's going pretty well," he told the press afterwards..
Durant followed his opening 65 with a 66, followed by Heath Slocum (66) and Rich Barcelo (67) who are at -8 then Brian Gay (65) and Mathias Gronberg (67) at -7

Two older guys are on top at Sea Island in the second of the Fall Series..
They are,David Toms 43, and Joe Durant, 46 neither of whom have won since 2006. Toms is secure for 2011 (58th in the money list) while Durant is not at 131st.
Toms, 64,66 had a 10-under 130 total . He has won 12 times on tour, nine in warm climates
"Here we are again, in the South and on Bermuda grass, and it's going pretty well," he told the press afterwards..
Durant followed his opening 65 with a 66, followed by Heath Slocum (66) and Rich Barcelo (67) who are at -8 then Brian Gay (65) and Mathias Gronberg (67) at -7
